WHO WE ARE: Sage Institute is a non-profit that provides high-quality training, accessible psychedelic therapy and innovative research at our sliding-scale clinic, fostering effective and culturally-responsive mental health treatment for underserved communities in Oakland and the surrounding Bay Area.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for overseeing all operations, strategic planning, and ensuring the growth and fiscal responsibility of the organization. It is the responsibility of the ED to further the mission and values of Sage Institute, and to hold strategic vision in collaboration with the board of directors.

LOCATION: This is currently a remote position, with the goal of it becoming a hybrid role (primarily remote with 1-2 days of work per week in Sage Institute's office located in Oakland) once it is safe to do so. The timing of this transition from remote to hybrid work is dependent upon current recommendations by Alameda County Public Health Department. Non-local applicants welcome to apply if willing to relocate within first six months.

Areas of Responsibility: 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will provide commitment and vision, identify and articulate objectives, and lead - in word and deed - the organization’s operations in a manner that is most efficient and effective toward the fulfillment of its mission and goals.

  • Will create an environment of trust, accountability, and mutual respect for a diverse group of team members, employees, and contractors, as well as for clients

  • Will update and implement strategic plan in collaboration with board of directors to further establish Sage Institute as a pioneer in the field of psychedelic-assisted therapy

  • Will ensure compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations, and approve policies and procedures of the organization

  • Will be responsible for ensuring the clinical operations of the organization are delivered with the highest standards of quality and safety

  • Will be responsible for ensuring the financial health of the organization

  • Will develop and oversee fiscal management and organizational budget of $1.2M in collaboration with board of directors

  • Will develop and maintain alliances and partnerships necessary to enable the organization’s mission

  • Will oversee fund development efforts and develop and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors

  • Will serve as primary spokesperson and representative of the organization, including educational presentations to diverse and target audiences to promote Sage Institute’s mission

  • Will oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and ongoing development of staff

  • Will act as primary liaison between the board and the organization, and keep the board informed of all issues impacting the agency

  • Will participate in development of programming and streamlining operational systems

  • Will oversee office operations

  • Will strategically position the organization to execute on its mission to provide an open-source model for starting a sliding fee, psychedelic-assisted therapy clinic

  • Has excellent written and oral communication skills, including negotiation and public speaking

  • Capable of navigating complex conversations and managing conflict amongst team members, staff, therapists, and interns related to racial equity, power and privilege, and organizational transparency

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, Master’s degree preferred

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of community mental health,

  • Knowledge of psychedelic-assisted therapies

  • 5 years minimum of progressive management, administrative, and/or leadership experience in nonprofit mental health care 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage senior staff

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement organizational budget

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with board of directors

  • Demonstrated ability to develop new relationships with new donors and raise significant funds

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage strategic partnerships

  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic planning process and implement successfully

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement organizational policies and procedures

Compensation/Benefits: 

HOURS & COMPENSATION: This is a full-time exempt position. Annual salary range of $120-150k plus benefits and will be negotiated commensurate with experience. Changes in compensation package will be tied to organizational growth.

Additional Information: 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position requires occasional sitting, standing, walking and driving. Frequent use of computer and phone. Lifting is required occasionally, of no more than 20 lbs. at a time. 

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in an office environment or remotely in the community. Travel may be required to serve as spokesperson for the organization. Adherence to any specific safety policies regarding COVID-19 is required.
