The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system. The Center creates operating programs that have been documented to improve public safety, enhance public trust in justice, and reduce the use of jail and prison. The Center also performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to justice innovators around the world.
As a member of the senior leadership team at the Center and reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Community Crime Prevention is responsible for developing, articulating, and implementing a strategic vision for crime and violence prevention work across the Center for Court Innovation. The Center’s current investments in crime prevention include youth development programs, placemaking work, and adaptations of the Cure Violence model. The Director of Community Crime Prevention oversees a portfolio of programs at multiple locations across New York City, including the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center, Save Our Streets, Youth Justice Board, and Queens Youth Justice Center. The Director of Community Crime Prevention is also responsible for overseeing the Center’s work on the Mayors Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety in 15 public housing developments located in all five boroughs.
The Director of Community Crime Prevention is responsible not just for managing existing work but for devising and planning new projects. In doing so, the Director of Community Crime Prevention works in partnership with the leadership of other departments at the Center and with a host of city agency and community partners. The Director of Community Crime Prevention is also responsible for working with researchers to evaluate program impacts, working with the Center’s communication team to develop multimedia materials that illustrate the Center’s crime prevention work, and working with the Center’s national technical assistance team to aid crime prevention efforts across the country. In collaboration with the Development Department, the Director of Community Crime Prevention also spearheads fundraising efforts, identifying grant opportunities, writing proposals, and developing strategic partnerships.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Articulate a vision for the agency’s involvement in community-based crime prevention and ensure that the agency remains at the cutting edge in this field.
- Directly supervise leadership staff in the Community Crime Prevention Department including the Director of Public Health and Safety Strategies, the Project Director of the Queens Youth Justice Center, the Director of Youth Justice Capacity Building, and others.
- Develop (and raise money to support) new programs that address emerging needs in New York City neighborhoods.
- Create a culture of excellence and support to encourage continuous quality improvement and professional growth among staff within the department.
- Lead program planning and development efforts.
- Work with staff to solve problems, address operational needs, and manage conflicts and crises at the project sites.
- Build and implement data-driven methods to better assess crime prevention program outcomes, including performance measures, data collection work flows, business processes, dashboard metrics and other tools to promote accountability and support goal attainment.
- Oversee annual budget planning and human resource management for the department.
- Maintain and expand key partnerships with institutional stakeholders and partners including the Family and Criminal Courts, Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, New York City Law Department, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, New York City Housing Authority, District Attorneys, the defense bar, New York City Police Department, New York City Department of Probation, New York City Administration for Children’s Services and a range of community-based organizations, elected officials, service providers, educational and academic institutions and youth and family serving organizations.
- Participate in national technical assistance efforts as needed.
- Coordinate regularly and effectively with key Center departments including Fiscal, Administration, Human Resources, Technology, Development and others to ensure smooth operations for all project locations.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of experience working to improve public safety and public health at the neighborhood level. The candidate should have a solid understanding of one or more of the areas that comprise the Center’s existing crime prevention work: Cure Violence, youth development, and placemaking. Knowledge of community development and other crime prevention programs is a plus. The candidate must also have successful experience supervising diverse staff and managing complicated projects. The candidate must have exceptional communication skills and must demonstrate a capacity for network building, partnership development, and fundraising.
Other Requirements:
- At least five years of demonstrated success in program and staff management, with highly developed team building, staff supervision, and mentoring skills
- Master’s degree or above in social work, public administration, law, or other related field is preferred but not required
- Experience with data-driven management techniques including the development of project metrics and performance measures
- Demonstrated success in administrative, fiscal, time and project management
- Experience in fundraising including successful partnership and network building, grant proposal writing, funder relations, and contract management
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of staff and partners in a fast-paced environment
