CPJ has an immediate need for a Deputy Advocacy Director. The Deputy Advocacy Director provides dynamic and innovative leadership, promoting a culture of advocacy across the organization and overseeing the daily operations of the Advocacy and Communications team. The role directly supports the Director of Advocacy and Communications in crafting departmental strategy and contributes to the development and implementation of the best ways to leverage CPJ’s research for maximum influence and impact on a global scale. The Deputy plays a key role in upholding the highest professional standards, while ensuring that advocacy and communications are fully synced and consistently reflected in CPJ’s interactions with policy stakeholders, the press freedom community and the media. An empathetic people manager, the Deputy will be an operationally astute strategic thinker with global expertise, equal parts policy advocate and communicator.

Areas of Responsibility: 

 

  • Provide input on strategy and guide the execution of CPJ’s short and longer-term advocacy objectives with an inclusive, strategic approach; contribute to the development of new products or initiatives that can bolster CPJ’s public profile and influence; steer projects from start to finish; create or implement streamlined operational processes.
  • Monitor developments pertaining to press freedom and related issues and identify opportunities for strategic action by CPJ independently or in alliance with others in pursuit of critical results or to strengthen ongoing efforts. 
  • Lead coordination and actively promote collaboration, and information sharing within and across teams to maximize results across CPJ’s full set of priority issues and, ensure its capacities and expertise are deployed efficiently and effectively in pursuit of the organization’s objectives.
  • Working in tandem with the Deputy Director of Digital and Social Media, ensure that advocacy initiatives, priorities and alliances are proactively reflected with policy consistency and cohesive messaging across outputs; implement a metrics and analysis framework that captures impact and feeds into data-informed decision making.
  • Manage a small team with a global scope, plus consultants or interns, as needed, guiding the workflow within the team with clear responsibilities and timelines; draft or oversee project and campaign briefs in partnership with colleagues across the organization and develop work plans against them.
  • Supervise CPJ’s media relations, and other external outreach efforts (e.g., report launches, partnerships, events or other initiatives), ensuring cohesive messaging and branding while overseeing the lifecycle of CPJ media, communications and promotional materials; fill in as needed (write press releases, media pitching etc.)
  • Act as principal deputy to the director on advocacy and communications issues, occasionally managing team and/or cross-departmental meetings
  • Support the Director in the development and implementation of public campaigns, participating in conceptualization, execution, quality control and evaluation.
  • Support the Director in coalitions and/or multilateral engagement (UN, Media Freedom Coalition etc.); track and identify UN/multilateral advocacy and opportunities; connect regional programs with diplomats and United Nations agencies, regional and multilateral institutions, and/or press freedom groups for strategic advocacy. 
  • Serve as a media spokesperson and represent CPJ at external events, as needed. 
  • Support the Director and team to craft annual priorities/work plans and assist in overseeing the annual budget; conduct performance reviews.
  • Other duties as assigned. Evening/weekend duties, as needed; rotating weekends and holidays on-call.

Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications

 

● Master’s Degree

● Demonstrated experience developing and executing communications plans, campaigns, and materials.

● Excellent writing, editing and presentation skills; able to draft press releases and marketing copy.

● Meticulous attention to detail and able to juggle multiple deadlines and priorities simultaneously

● International work or study experience; understanding of the global media landscape

● People management skills (e.g., hiring, training, communicating, supervising, mentoring and appraising personnel).

● Able to work independently and excel in a fast-paced environment with the ability to course correct on short or long-term activities/goals.

● Able to lead a team and processes while maintaining positive, respectful professional relationships.

● Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace and external relations

● Fluent or advanced level Arabic, French, or Spanish

 

Skills

 

● Robust knowledge of messaging approaches, email systems and advocacy tool; experience with project management tools (i.e. Hive, Trello or other similar systems)

● Experience working with the United Nations, and other multilateral, international organizations (e.g. OSCE, World Bank, etc.)

● Experience communicating with senior level members of institutions and governments.

 

Experience 

 

6+ years of experience in global non-profit advocacy, PR/ communications and/or public policy, with at least 3 years in a management role.
