Location:   Northern Great Plains region: SE Montana, NE Wyoming, SW North Dakota or                                               NW South Dakota

The Northern Great Plains Program Manager will advance the conservation of birds and habitats in the Northern Great Plains of the U.S. with an emphasis on, but not limited to, grassland and shrub-steppe birds.  The Program Manager will implement the Northern Great Plains program that is based on sound science, landscape-oriented, and integrated with diverse partners including state and federal agencies, NGOs, tribal nations, and private landowners and corporations. The Program Manager will work closely with varied stakeholders in bird conservation across the Northern Great Plains to develop shared objectives for achieving bird conservation goals, and connect local and regional efforts to larger scale conservation opportunities to advance full life cycle conservation of migratory birds.

Areas of Responsibility: 

DUTIES:

  • The Program Manager currently supervises two Conservation Specialists focused on providing technical assistance to landowners through Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and other incentive programs that advance habitat management for the benefit of birds.  Additional regional staff may be added depending on future funding and opportunities.
  • The Program Manager will lead the NGP Program to advance habitat conservation to recover declining populations of grassland birds including Long-billed Curlew, Lark Bunting, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspurs, and other species with a focus on maintaining intact grasslands and restoring healthy grasslands capable of supporting birds, livelihoods such as ranching, and local communities.
  • The Program Manager will support implementation of ABC’s BirdScapes approach in the Northern Great Plains including BirdScape identification and delineation, conservation strategy development, engaging partners, landowners and managers in shared landscape objectives, and tracking progress towards BirdScape goals. The Program Manager will also work to develop and implement monitoring programs that demonstrate progress in habitat conservation and bird responses.
  • The Program Manager will work closely with the Northern Great Plains Joint Venture (NGPJV) partnership and integrate objectives from the NGPJV Implementation Plan and decision support tools with population and habitat objectives for BirdScapes in the region

  • The Program Manager will work with the NRCS to promote, accelerate enrollment, coordinate, and implement the conservation provisions of the Federal Farm Bill and other related wildlife conservation programs in areas and habitats important to grassland and sage-steppe birds. The Program Manager will work with state and federal wildlife agencies, and other organizations to help landowners participate in financial and technical assistance incentives for habitat conservation.
  • The Program Manager will share the comprehensive vision of bird conservation with contributors to relevant bird and natural resource initiatives in order to foster a strong commitment to shared objectives in the Northern Plains.
  • The Program Manager will work with ABC’s Development team to obtain funding for the Northern Great Plains Conservation effort and work with ABC’s Finance team to manage grants, track budgets, and write progress reports. And will work with other ABC Divisions as possible and needed.

Skills/Experience: 

REQUIREMENTS:

• Three or more years’ experience in partnership-based conservation.

• At least a Bachelor’s Degree (with very significant work experience) and preferably a graduate degree in a resource management or biological field. 

• An understanding of the geography, land use, conservation issues, birds, and conservation partners in the Northern Great Plains.

• The ability to collaborate and establish positive relationships with those involved in agriculture and sustainable land use practices, including natural resource professionals, ranchers and landowners.

• A willingness and ability to travel frequently (COVID dependent) and a valid driver’s license.

• Ability to obtain USDA Federal Security Clearance.

Compensation/Benefits: 

$65,000-$70,000 DOE
