Pickering Creek Audubon Center seeks a Teacher Naturalist and Summer Camp Director to contribute to the growth of our successful environmental education programs. This position will lead the Center’s efforts to expand the public program offerings and will serve as an integral part of our education staff. This position will report to the Center Director.
This position will work closely with the Center staff to ensure smooth delivery of public, education, camp, and conservation programs. The Teacher Naturalist and Summer Camp Director will work approximately 35 hours per week, including evening and weekend hours.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Lead, manage and update various K-12 school environmental programs and curriculum. May include, but not limited to: teacher professional development workshops; program evaluations and assessments; lesson planning and development; and alignment of programs with relevant state and national standards.
- Support the development and execution of environmental education programming for school aged students.
- Teach at school classrooms and field experiences at the Center and other locations with preK through high school students. Work closely with staff to update lessons and materials and train seasonal educators on each program.
- Direct summer EcoCamp programming. EcoCamp duties may include, but are not limited to: spring program planning and curriculum development, coordination and implementation of registration, daily camp operations and camp preparations, guide state department of health certification process, ensure necessary trainings are in place for all staff, training summer camp staff and junior naturalists, guide and support camp counselors in the field, develop innovative camp activities, act as primary contact with camp families, facilitate broad connection of campers and their families to Audubon’s mission, provide camp transport in Pickering Creek vehicles, assisting with planning and implementing parent engagement opportunities.
- Work with the Center Director and Education Manager to develop and grow the interpretive facilities of the Center, including but not limited to: updating Welcome Center and trail kiosk materials, development of interpretive trail materials, and championing small and large-scale strategic site projects.
- Assist in operation and expansion of Junior Naturalist Youth Leadership program.
- Support efforts to broadly engage the community with the Center and Audubon.
- Participation in the maintenance of buildings and grounds.
- Serve as an inclusive role model naturalist and environmental steward.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree and professional experience in a conservation education setting including teaching, management experience and curriculum development required. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
Skills/Experience:
- Demonstrated knowledge of educational program design and assessment, knowledge of wildlife conservation issues, and ability to articulate them and inspire participation. Experience with measurement and evaluation best practices strongly preferred.
- Must have the ability to coordinate a busy schedule and use resources efficiently as well as provide cutting edge ideas to move our programming forward.
- Ability to cultivate strong working relationships with local organizations, agencies, school districts, local Audubon chapters, educators, and potential supporters is essential.
- Proven skills teaching in formal and informal settings to a variety of audiences. Desire to connect children of all ages to nature a must.
- Attention to detail, excellent time-management and organizational skills, and the ability to solve problems creatively.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Grant writing and other forms of fundraising desirable.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently in a fast-paced environment, all while exercising discretion and personal judgment
- A self-starter, who takes initiative and demonstrates dedication; a problem-solver who works to see projects through to completion.
- Must be people oriented, have a team-focused attitude, and the ability to professionally represent Audubon to the public
- Commitment to conservation and the Audubon mission
- Must be available for weekend or evening programs.
- Must be willing to travel as the job requires.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Spanish proficiency a plus, not required.
