President and Chief Executive Officer, Alpha-1 Foundation

 

Organization

The Alpha-1 Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1995 by three individuals affected by Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.  The mission of the Alpha-1 Foundation is to find a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and to improve the lives of people affected by Alpha-1 worldwide.  The Foundation has developed a solid infrastructure to promote research and the development of new therapies.  Since 1999, the Foundation has invested a total of $71 million dollars to support research and programs in the US and globally.  For more information, please visit www.alpha1.org.

 

Position

Reporting to the Board of Directors (BOD), the Chief Executive Officer will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Alpha-1 Foundation’s staff, programs, execution of mission, and future growth.   He/she will initially develop deep knowledge of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, the core programs of the Foundation, operations, and research priorities. 

 

Responsibilities

The job consists of three broad areas of responsibility. 

  • Financial performance and viability – The CEO will be responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Foundation by providing oversight of the annual budget, fundraising and development efforts, cultivating relationships with existing industry partners and identifying additional sources of revenue.   In this role, he/she will work closely with the CFO, and board members on the Budget and Nominating Committee, the Finance and Investment Committee, and the Development Committee. 
  • Organization mission and strategy – The CEO will lead the Foundation in its role as valuable resource to the research and patient community in the areas of research, advocacy, education, and service.  Additionally, he/she will engage members of the scientific and clinical community, BOD, leaders in voluntary health agencies, government and regulatory agencies, and industry to understand the nature and scope of issues in the community.   He/she will convey to the staff, BOD, members of the Alpha-1 community, industry, and government agencies a strategic vision of the organization’s current mission and future goals.   
  • Organization operations – The CEO will be responsible for setting up the office and administrative procedures, guiding communication efforts, hiring and retaining competent and qualified staff.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a leader with strong administrative skills who has a record of accomplishment and respect in the nonprofit healthcare community.  The CEO will be thoroughly committed to the mission of the Alpha-1 Foundation.  He/she will possess most if not all of the qualifications listed below.    

 

Significant leadership experience in the voluntary health sector, knowledgeable and familiar with the non-profit healthcare community

Knowledge in research administration and grant funding mechanisms

Demonstrated experience in working with and reporting to a diverse board of directors

Experience in patient advocacy, health care policy, and work with health care regulatory organizations is desirable

Commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation

Advanced degree, ideally an MBA, with at least 5-10 years of senior management experience; track record of leading growth in an organization

Excellent leadership skills; the successful candidate must have emotional intelligence and be diplomatic, charismatic, persuasive, and credible to a wide variety of audiences 

An analytical thinker with strong planning and financial management skills

High energy, self-direction, stamina, and strong work ethic
