We are looking for a creative communications professional committed to climate justice. Experience with media and press relations in Argentina required.

The Argentina Communications Specialist shall develop and execute strategies for 350.org’s national campaigns through direct (digital) and indirect (media) communications work, as well as implement regional communications strategies in alignment with global communications objectives. The Argentina Communications Specialist will capture relevant national media moments using narratives and outputs aligned with regional and global strategies, in raising the voices of local communities around the world that have been affected by climate change, and in fighting for climate justice.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Satisfying the role described above will require the Communications Specialist to perform the following responsibilities:

Media relations: identify relevant media contacts, cultivate relationships with national journalists, and further develop and maintain media contacts lists

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with media correspondents in designated country and with 350.org’s communications staff to identify and access the most appropriate contacts for specific campaigns
  • Pitch stories and op-eds to specific outlets or individual journalists
  • Collaborate with global and multimedia communications staff to spread regional or global stories of relevance to national media and coordinate spread of national stories globally
  • Provide input and respond to traditional media requests
  • Organize media briefings, identify and attend events that relevant journalists are likely to attend
  • Help expand existing databases by tracking media hits and collecting press and regional communications consultants’ contact information

Media materials: develop media materials such as press releases, media packages, as well as multimedia materials where possible/relevant

  • Write and issue press releases, media statements, articles such as opinion pieces, and blog posts
  • Prepare media packages for bigger events
  • Coordinate development of digital communications (multimedia materials such as photos, videos, audio recordings, social media posts) with wider communications team and translations where possible and relevant
  • Support 350.org national staff and partners in producing media materials

Media engagement: monitor media, identify digital and media opportunities and engage with issues relevant for 350.org’s work and broader context

  • Identify media debates relevant for 350.org’s work, plus broader context, and assess whether to engage
  • Create and coordinate media responses including rapid response communication
  • Place national stories, which raise the voices of frontline communities impacted by climate change, grassroots organizers, or indigenous leaders in key media outlets and initiate digital communications developments
  • Coordinate media events and actions with 350.org network and partners

Media strategies: develop and implement strategic media and digital communications plans for specific campaigns and national events

  • Develop and implement strategic communication plans for specific campaigns and national events (including key messages, goals, target audience, priority outlets, and timeline), in collaboration with wider communications staff and the national or regional team
  • Monitor, evaluate, and share articles relevant to our work with the communications and editorial teams (via Google and Meltwater)
  • Manage and coordinate the nation’s communications and align media and digital outreach with regional and global moments and organizational objectives
  • Lead on communications for specific regional projects, based nationally or on professional expertise
  • Identify media opportunities and create interesting and appealing media moments when building the campaigns, projects and specific actions
  • Advise national or regional team on campaign and engagement strategies

Internal collaboration: collaborate departmentally and interdepartmentally to develop alignment between 350.org’s global and national communications

  • Provide capacity for the Regional Communications Coordinator to implement particular projects
  • Actively foster alignment between national, regional, and global communications in terms of narrative, messaging, communication strategies, and 350.org’s voice
    • Participate in regular calls with regional communications team and local / regional teams (including contractors) to integrate plans, avoid task duplication, align messaging and identify national to regional or global opportunities
    • Ensure that relevant national media moments and campaigns are covered by regional or global media and by digital means
    • Develop national outreach materials consistent with 350.org’s voice and wider organizational goals narrative
  • Think of and create space and opportunities for communications-owned specific projects of international scope
  • Support communications team logistics (i.e. scheduling campaign planning calls, reporting back relevant items for communications team discussion agendas)
  • Support translation staff with proofreading national language(s), if possible and necessary

Public Engagement: support and represent 350.org’s overall mission in public venues or other networks to strengthen climate change communications

  • Understand 350.org's history, campaigns, and theory of social change, and keep current with basic climate science and policy. From time to time, use this knowledge to represent 350.org's perspective in varied public venues based on geographic location and areas of expertise.
Skills/Experience: 

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others. The ideal candidate is an outstanding media relations professional, with a deep understanding of the Argentinian media landscape, as well as current global debates on climate, energy and fracking. The role is best suited to a strategic thinker with a proactive mindset, a native-level command of Spanish, and near-native command of English.

Required Qualifications: minimum qualifications necessary for a candidate to move forward to the next step of the screening process

  • At least three (3) years of experience in media relations and communications in designated nation
  • Knowledge of the national media landscape and strong media contact networks
  • Working knowledge of the current global debates on climate change and climate justice and strong interest in working on these issues
  • Multilingual proficiency in English and Spanish

Preferred Qualifications: desired, but not required, skills and experiences

  • Working knowledge of the current global debates on climate change, energy, and climate justice
  • Journalistic experience
  • Experience working remotely
  • Experience working in nongovernmental organization or nonprofit sector
  • Experience with data collection and media analysis
  • Professional experience in an international and/or multi-cultural environment
    • Experience and competency working in multicultural groups
    • Experience working and living in multiple countries
    • Fluency in Portuguese and local Indigenous languages
  • Able to travel internationally on occasion
  • Proficiency in Meltwater, CiviCRM, Airtable, Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom or similar systems
