GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Executive Director, Principal Gifts is responsible for the daily management and coordination of the principal gifts fundraising effort in support of the United States Naval Academy and the Brigade of Midshipmen. He/She is also responsible for coordinating the regional gift activity in key areas of the country with a density of major and principal gifts prospects. Additionally, the Executive Director will serve as the Assistant Secretary of the USNA Foundation Board.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Executive Vice President of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, will work closely with the CEO of the Alumni Association and Foundation, and will be a member of the Foundation executive leadership team. The Executive Director will work closely with the major gift, communications, advancement services and stewardship staff and coordinate the activity of various regional committees, volunteers and Foundation Board members. The Executive Director will also work in close collaboration with Naval Academy leadership in generating proposals for the strategic initiatives to be funded by the campaign. He/she will manage the staff associated with principal gifts, stewardship and strategy.

The U.S. Naval Academy Foundation is currently in the final phase of a comprehensive campaign that is scheduled to conclude in fall 2020. This position will support the successful conclusion of the current campaign and be instrumental in planning and implementing the next campaign for the Naval Academy Foundation.

Areas of Responsibility: 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Principal Gifts

  • The Executive Director, Principal Gifts will report directly to the EVP and will be a member of the senior leadership team in the Foundation. He/she will work closely with the CEO of the Alumni Association and Foundation and leaders in the Naval Academy Alumni Association.
  • The Executive Director will manage a small portfolio of principal gift donors and prospects. He/she will be responsible for the solicitation of gifts from assigned donors and prospects within the portfolio as well as in supporting all principal gift related activity made by the CEO, EVP, MGOs and leadership volunteers.
  • The Executive Director will plan donor visits for principal gift prospects to include scheduling coordination, the preparation of briefing materials, presentations and other correspondence, and collaboration with the Events staff on the execution of events.
  • The Executive Director will plan principal gift events in collaboration with the Events staff and will lead communications with volunteers sponsoring/supporting the events.
  • The Executive Director will coordinate an annual assessment of fundraising priorities with other Foundation staff and USNA leadership to track fundraising progress on funding priorities and refresh the case statement as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Vice President and the Foundation senior leadership team, the Executive Director will benchmark best practices and implement strategies to increase revenue and further professionalize the fundraising operation.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Vice President and Advancement Services Senior Director, the Executive Director will utilize data and analysis to drive decisions and to ensure continuous improvement.
  • The Executive Director will help assess the results of the 2020 Called to Serve, Daring to Lead campaign and prepare the development of the Case of Support for the next Naval Academy campaign.

 

Regional Activity

  • The Executive Director will work closely with the CEO, EVP and the major gifts team to coordinate the activity of regional volunteer committees and regional activity, to include the planning and implementation of regional events and communications with major and principal gift prospects in each region. The Executive Director will be the primary manager of the regional committees.
  • The Executive Director will work in conjunction with the EVP and the Marketing and Communications team to assist in the development of the communications platform for regional efforts and help produce the marketing materials in various media that will be used in key regions.
  • The Executive Director will help coordinate an annual assessment of fundraising priorities with other Foundation staff and USNA leadership, track fundraising progress on funding priorities, and refresh the case statement as needed.
  • The Executive Director will work in collaboration with the Executive Vice President and the Foundation senior leadership team to benchmark best practices and implement strategies to increase revenue, and further professionalize the fundraising operation.

Assistant Board Secretary

  • The Executive Director will prepare the agenda for Board meetings and all supporting materials.
  • The Executive Director will work with the Events and Communications staff to prepare the logistics for the Board meetings.
  • In coordination with the EVP, the Executive Director will support the meetings of the Foundation's Governance Committee and Nominations Committee, including drafting the agenda and supporting materials for all meetings.
  • The Executive Director will assist, as needed, in providing support for the Joint Committees of the Alumni Association and Foundation Boards. 
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred
  • 10+ years of major gift fundraising experience and major gift development staff leadership and results
  • 5+ years of principal gift donor stewardship experience and results
  • 5+ years working directly with the Board of Directors and senior management of an organization in the development area
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and strategizing a major campaign
  • Demonstrated experience in campaign fundraising with specific experience in individual giving and/or major gifts
  • Demonstrated experience in producing campaign materials or materials in a major project
  • Energetic, self-motivated, flexible, able to multi-task
  • Staff and volunteer management experience
  • Superior interpersonal and communications skills
  • Computer literacy; to include proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications
  • An attitude of service and the ability to motivate others
  • A sincere and enthusiastic belief in the mission of the U.S. Naval Academy

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience with military non-profit or higher education culture and practices
  • Familiarity with the United States Naval Academy
  • Experience with Raiser's Edge and/or CRM
  • Residency and work experience in greater metropolitan Baltimore/DC area preferred
