We are searching for a skilled leader to become our first Chief Operations and Finance Officer!
Our first COFO will work hand-in-hand with the CEO to advance the organization’s critical purpose: To clear the path to each child’s brightest future.
With direct responsibility for the oversight and management of the general operations of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska and its revenue earning branch, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Donation Center, the Chief Operations and Finance Officer will oversee a period of significant operational growth, developing and improving systems to support operational capacity, efficiencies and preparing for future growth.

Key Responsibilities
The Chief Operations and Finance Officer is a valued member of the leadership team, responsible for the oversight and management of the general operations of BBBSAK and the BBBSAK Donation Center. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Impact and Strategy
● Maintains a constant bird’s eye view on what’s happening across the organization, anticipating operational and financial needs, and proactively formulating plans of action to stay ahead of infrastructure needs and ensure all teams can operate efficiently and effectively.
● Provides ongoing support, council, and partnership to the CEO. Acts as a confident and innovative thinker to develop and refine organizational strategy with the CEO and other leadership team members.
● Serves as a member of the Leadership & Management team to collectively strengthen organizational planning, performance, processes, and communication, reinforce an organizational culture of trust and connection, and help bring a lens of racial equity to all of BBBSAK’s work.
Finance
● Financial oversight for BBBSAK & BBBSAK Donation Center, the revenue earning branch of BBBSAK. Principally responsible for continually monitoring cash flow, managing organizational budget, and ensuring that BBBSAK’s financial position remains strong, with support from staff and the Finance Committee.
● Oversees and directs organizational business strategy to ensure BBBSAK & BBBSAK Donation Center reflect a sustainable business model that supports organizational growth and mission delivery.
● Leads annual budgeting process and analysis of previous year’s spending.
● Ensures accounting systems and functions are operating efficiently and are properly resourced.
● Serves as primary staff liaison to the Finance Committee for the Board of Directors.
● Oversees strategy, resources and operational processes associated with seeking, administering, and reporting on government grants.
Administration & Technology
● Directly manages & oversees job responsibilities of Grants Manager/Special Projects and Donation Center General Manager to ensure that all operations, HR and finance needs are met across both organizations. Coaches these team members to higher levels of performance and responsibility each year.
● Oversees, coordinates, and participates in the development and implementation of administrative and operational policies and procedures that support established goals, objectives, and mission.
● Leads vendor procurement processes and serves as an administrator for key operational, HR, technological, and finance platforms and consultants as appropriate.
● Manages compliance and liability by ensuring the organization meets all financial reporting and filing deadlines, maintains appropriate insurance coverage, and mitigates risk by following labor laws and liaising with legal counsel, as needed.
● Develops and ensures understanding and compliance with Disaster and COOP plans.
● Oversees organization, updating and maintenance of electronic and paper filing systems and record retention policy.
● Serves as primary liaison to any technology contractors, vendors, or activities; anticipates technology needs and supports tactical implementation of new tools.
Human Resources
● Ensures both organizations are properly organized and resourced to provide effective Human Resource management.
● Designs and manages delivery of total rewards package for staff, including annual benefits review and enrollment, maintaining broker relationships, and ongoing analysis of benefits trends and creative options to strengthen BBBSAK’s people first approach.
● Supports management staff in talent acquisition, performance management, and professional development activities across the organization, encouraging use of best practices and tools.
● Ensures inclusive and equitable practices in all HR and operations functions.
Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate
All candidates will possess an excitement to make a meaningful impact in supporting the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska. While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes and experiences:
Experience
Required
● 3+ years of leadership experience with considerable knowledge of organizational management, project management, change management, systems & process improvement and growth strategy.
● 4-6 years of operations and finance experience, including direct budget development and oversight.
● Experience designing and implementing strategic organizational, operational, and/or business plans with a time horizon of 1 year+, with demonstrable results.
● Experience directly managing full-time staff and a proven track record of developing talent internally.
Preferred
● Oversight for budgets of $1M+ preferred.
● Experience with government grants and managing complex revenues.
● Accounting experience is a plus.
● HR experience, including administering or directing employee benefits and end to end talent acquisition preferred.
● Experience working remotely/virtually with statewide relationships and responsibilities, preferred.
