The Assistant Director of Channels and Acquired Program Partnerships will program NPR’s three news-talk radio channels, including NPR Now on Sirius/XM, NPR Armed Forces Network, and NPR Worldwide. They will collaborate with NPR’s News and Programming departments, member stations, and independent producers to create successful streams. They will also be responsible for daily operation of those channels including overseeing automation systems and planning special programming. Additionally, our new Assistant Director will serve as the primary liaison between our programming and member partnership teams.
This position reports to the Director of Programming and supervises the work of a small staff.
- Supervises the programming of NPR Now on Sirius/XM, NPR Armed Forces Network, and NPR Worldwide.
- Works with the Director of Programming to establish goals, objectives and priorities, and oversees their implementation.
- Oversees the 24-hour / 7 day a week automation for the streams, including traffic, production, promotion, and special event programming.
- Monitors programming of the streams in a consistent manner and provides critiques.
- Provides updated digital program schedules and descriptions for the streams, and monitors the accuracy of schedules on digital platforms.
- Writes and edit copy and produces material for broadcast.
- Maintains system for integrating live or recorded host content into the daily line-up.
- Ensures that NPR standards for editorial integrity, artistic excellence and technical quality are upheld, including standards of fairness, objectivity and balance.
- Maintains internal relationships with other NPR departments.
- Serves as the primary liaison between our programming and member partnership teams, building new and improved workflows.
- Maintains external relationships with acquired program producers.
- Manages and coordinates relations with overseas broadcasters and other foreign agencies:
- Manages, coordinates and serves as liaison in dealings with overseas broadcasters on production and non-production issues.
- Deals with program-related requests from foreign broadcasters and works with Technical Production to facilitate requests.
- Arranges feeds of NPR programming to foreign broadcasters and arranges for feeds from them.
- Monitors and advises on developments in international transmission/distribution for audio, voice and data communications.
- Minimum of five years of experience in radio production or programming required.
- Must have writing and editing ability and skills.
- Must have strong radio production skills.
- Must have experience supervising major projects or initiatives.
- Must have demonstrated ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
- Must understand and use principles of effective management.
- News experience strongly desired.
