The Associate Group Fitness Director, under the direction of the Association Director of Health and Wellness, will oversee Land and Water Group Fitness Classes, fee-based wellness programs and community health and wellness offerings for the YMCA of Springfield.  The Associate Director of Group Fitness will work with the Health and Wellness management team to develop, plan and implement new and existing programs, procedures and methods to achieve the YMCA of Springfield’s strategic goals and strengthen membership engagement, ensuring these programs are aligned with the Y’s cause, operate within a culture of safety and meet the needs of the community.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Overarching Goal:  Though their planning, actions and daily work creates and fosters an environment for staff to effectively build community within class and be able to modify the class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs.

  • Under the direction of the Association Director of Health and Wellness, implement strategies that grow participation, improves overall effectiveness and increases the satisfaction of land and water Group Fitness at both branches.
  • Monitors and stays abreast of trends within the fitness industry for varying age groups and populations.
  • Ensures safe and positive environments for all program offerings.
  • Helps manage budgets to achieve established goals.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with staff, members, and program participants, helping them connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Recruits, hires, trains and evaluates all staff within assigned programs.
  • Communicates programs and scheduling information effectively; with a published, shared schedule has a presence at the branches especially during peak program times to answer member and participant questions.
  • Works with Association Director of Health and Wellness, as well as facility scheduling coordinators, to ensure optimum offerings to Y members through maximum use of available facilities.
  • Supervise and evaluate instructors maintaining staff records as necessary: attendance, scheduling software/app, performance evaluation, etc.
  • Support, train and develop staff so they have the tools to observe and adjust approaches to support all participants’ capability and physical conditions, health and culture and celebrate achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  • Monitors and compares weekly the scheduled staff coverage and the actual staff coverage via the time and attendance system and reports to department director any patterns or issues which would negatively impact operations or patron satisfaction and initiates any actions needed to ensure all assigned staff are compensated each pay period to time worked.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA of Springfield policy and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Oversees and maintains member or usage records for all programs: daily attendance, registration forms, par-q forms, etc.
  • Provides guidance to instructors, ensuring they are prepared for each class. Coordinate and conduct instructor in-services as needed.
  • Responsible for monitoring and purchasing necessary equipment as budget permits for upkeep and ensuring cleanliness of equipment and program areas.
  • Ensures minimal disruption to member services through effective staff substitution systems and keeps personal certification and training current to leads programs or classes in best circumstances at least one time per week personally and subbing as necessary.
  • Leads assigned aspects of annual fund-raising campaign and engages in collaborative relationships with community organizations to strengthen support and build community.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned by the Association Director of Health and Wellness.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Effective verbal, written communication skills in addition too good organizational skills.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in healthy living, wellness based programming, and teaching group exercise classes. Must be able to teach a variety of group exercise classes such as (dance, weight-bearing, step and spinning, active older adults, and water classes).
  • Must have a nationally recognized group exercise certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NETA or equivalent). 
  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge in area(s) of expertise.
  • Comfortable with social media and apps for marketing and group communication.
  • Daily approach of organization, detail and responsiveness.
  • Demonstrates through words and actions skill set to be a team leader and player, strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead a team focused on providing superior member experience always. 
  • Demonstrates ability to manage staff and budgets to achieve established goals and objectives with particular focus on revenue and cost controls.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $28,000.00 - $35,000.00
