Spatial Planning Technical Coordinator provides technical and scientific support and leadership as a subject matter resource (SMR) for spatial planning, and in particular, Marxan. S/he will be responsible for stewarding the “Marxan revolution” and developing and supporting spatial action planning for the Conservancy’s Shared Conservation Agenda.  S/he collaborates with communications teams to increase visibility of key projects and research findings. S/he acts as an ambassador for the Global Science team, promoting and explaining key strategies to both within TNC and to external stakeholders. S/he collaborates with other scientists and institutions to enhance Conservancy practices.

This is a 2-year term position that reports to the Lead Scientist, Asia Pacific Region.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Spatial Planning Technical Coordinator advises conservation teams on designing and conducting experiments.  They may lead a program or project relative to conservation planning, research and stewardship.  They collaborate with other scientists and institutions to enhance Conservancy practices.  Specifically:

  • Manage the continued development of Marxan, including training, fundraising, and liaising with users
  • Writing up Marxan manuals, and case studies, with a focus on Marxan with Zones
  • Developing spatial “action planning” using Marxan
  • Spatial action planning in support the Conservancy’s Shared Conservation Agenda

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Supports program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment.
  • Participate and/or lead a cross functional team.
  • May manage a grant, contract or write a request for proposal.
  • Must maintain scientific credibility through peer reviewed publications, research and communication.
  • Interprets guidelines, evaluates information and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances for the
  • program.
  • Provides a variety spatial planning information, including relevant research findings from the spatial planning literature, to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and ensuring workflow.
  • Fosters internal and external collaborations including with TNC business units and universities.
  • Mentors interns, staff and post-docs.
  • Self-motivated training so that skills remain current.
  • May provide training for internal and external colleagues on ecological and conservation scientific principles.
  • May manage spatial planning programmers
Educational Background: 
Master's Degree in science related field and 4 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience delivering conservation planning outcomes into the field
  • Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting statistical or environmental data.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.                         
  • Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.                       
  • Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams.                                       
  • Experience managing complex projects including the financial aspect and coordinating the work of peers and partners.
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • PhD and 1-3 years’ experience considered.
  • Experience delivering conservation planning outcomes into the field.
  • Strong knowledge of Marxan.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Training experience
