Under the direction of the Program Director, the Gymnastics Head Coach is to provide instruction and leadership in the Gymnastic Team Program in accordance with the policies and purposes of the YMCA. The Gymnastics Coach will teach a variety of gymnastics classes in a positive, safe, educational and fun environment.

This position also treats everyone with courtesy, respect and consideration; displays integrity; listens actively and genuinely; communicates in a clear and pleasant manner; embraces differences among people; demonstrates an active willingness to learn and grow; accepts constructive criticism; works cooperatively as a team member.

Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; makes relationship building the number one priority at all times. This position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA is conveyed.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide direct “hands-on” leadership in coaching gymnasts ages 3-18 years of age.
  • Recruit, orient, train, supervise, evaluate and reward staff and volunteers.
  • Present quality image through staff attire and interaction with members and participants.
  • Prepare lesson plans and routines for classes.
  • Develop and implement gymnastics programs at all levels including gymnastics camp.
  • Initiate, plan and implement new program ideas.
  • Promote the YMCA facilities and programs; including preparation of the gymnastics’ schedule.
  • Market the gymnastics program; convey information about the program to the public.
  • Responsible for communication with parents.
  • Maintain all gymnastic equipment and training areas.
  • Set up and take down equipment each day and inspect for safety.
  • Be responsible for safely spotting and lifting children of all ages.
  • Document skill information and recommend gymnast level.
  • Notify supervisor of any absences and secure a substitute.
  • Attend all instructor trainings and conduct staff meetings.
  • Organize and attend meets while representing the YMCA in a professional manner.
  • Follow emergency and safety procedures; complete incident reports as necessary.
  • Supervise children before, during and after class.
  • Develop participants into YMCA members, volunteers and “owners”.
  • Assist director in development and management of annual budget.
  • Aid in branch and association special events, outreach campaign committees, etc. as needed.
  • This job description may not be all-inclusive and duties may be modified when deemed appropriate by the CEO. Employees are expected to perform all other duties as assigned and directed by the CEO.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum age of 21 years old.
  • Have 3-5 years of experience in gymnastics instruction, equipment and technique.
  • 1-2 years of experience in YMCA programs, philosophies and objectives preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate well with others, be a team player and have good leadership skills.
  • Have certifications in CPR/AED, USAG Safety Certification, YMCA Gymnastics Instructor Certification and USAG Meet Director Certification. 
  • Must be able to relate effectively to diverse groups of people of all ages.
