Social Media Specialist, Government and Community Relations

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Social Media Specialist has general responsibility for establishing relationships with WWP’s following using various online social platforms to communicate organizational priorities, trending topics, and the monitoring and moderating of online discussions on social media platforms and blogs. The WWP DC-based Social Media Specialist will focus on developing content to communicate WWP’s policy and advocacy priorities and ongoing work with the federal government, military and veteran’s service organizations, and like-minded partner organizations that are serving the needs of warriors and their families.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Social media specialist will generate interest in WWP programs and services while building relationships with WWP following on social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+, SnapChat, Pinterest, and various related blogs/websites
  • Responsible for monitoring online mentions of WWP and providing the organization’s response to conversations, trending topics, and issues
  • Responsible for responding to posts or social inquiries with the approved standard messaging
  • Develop social media content in the organization’s voice while maintaining a social media look and feel
  • Develop, and manage content for WWP’s DC-focused social media channels
  • Work closely with WWP government and community relations staff to develop understanding of legislative and policy priorities, and strategic partnerships, and identify appropriate channels for messaging WWP’s work within this space
  • Generate interest in WWP advocacy efforts, while building relationships with WWP following and veteran and military stakeholders on relevant social media platforms
  • Design strategy for legislative and policy social media campaigns and make recommendations for organizational messaging initiatives and identify opportunities for engagement and action with social following
  • Monitor legislative and policy trends and conversations on social channels surrounding the advocacy efforts of WWP
  • Monitor content from partnerships’ social media channels and identify opportunities to amplify impact
  • Contribute to content for CEO’s social media public profile page
  • Monitor online mentions of WWP relating to advocacy and provide the organization’s response to conversations, trending topics, and issues
  • Monitor online technologies and identify opportunities to utilize emerging social media platforms
  • Create multimedia content that illustrates difficult-to-understand issues and increases engagement with the organization’s following
  • Produce live video streaming and conduct live interviews to promote WWP’s legislative and policy efforts, partnerships, and impact on warriors
  • Attend forums, Congressional hearings, and meetings to develop social content and real-time social reporting
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on the audiences following WWP’s DC-based social media platforms and identify the appropriate content to engage with the organization’s following
  • Responsible for preparing monthly and quarterly social media analytics reports for leadership and strategic partnerships team and has an advanced understanding of performance metrics for social success and search engine optimization tactics
  • Other related duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in social media, marketing, communications, public relations, or journalism preferred
Skills/Experience:

  • Highly motivated, passionate, and creative team player with demonstrated commitment to the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team environment
  • Significant experience managing social media channels, particularly Twitter
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize and complete assignments accurately and in a timely manner
  • Able to effectively handle multiple priorities with a strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated proficiency in multimedia creation; photography and videography, image and video editing, copywriting and editing, etc.
  • Strong understanding of how the government works and the legislative process
  • Familiarity with military and veterans service organizations
  • Keen understanding of performance metrics for social success and search engine optimization tactics
  • Ability to craft quick responses with high level of accuracy and attention to detail while appropriately representing the organization’s mission
  • Able to troubleshoot, identify viable options, and problem-solve
  • Ability to take initiative, multi-task, and work well under pressure
  • Demonstrated proficiency on all social media platforms with strong competency on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube
  • Demonstrated ability to handle social crisis communications
  • Must be detail oriented and possess excellent written, editing, and grammar skills
  • Must possess a professional presence and demeanor

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Four (4) years’ experience in social media messaging, analytics reporting, and content creation required
  • Four (4) years’ experience in copywriting, editing, design, photography, videography, and creativity required
  • Two (2) years’ experience working on Capitol Hill or in a fast-paced government affairs position
