The Conservation Coordinator works in a program or preserve office and provides administrative, research, project management and other general assistance to program staff working toward the achievement of protection, conservation or stewardship goals.

S/he will support efforts linking urban forestry research and citizen science in partnership with the USDA Forest Service (USFS) NYC Urban Field Station to 1) develop and implement urban tree health assessment data collection protocols and 2) develop training and outreach materials related to this and other Urban Field Station network research efforts. The incumbent will assist with phone app development, database management, field data checks, and outreach and training material development. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Conservation Coordinator may manage conservation data, participate in conservation planning, develop project packages, respond to landowner inquiries and maintain manual project records.  May include collecting, assembling and analyzing various types of data, in the field or through document surveys, producing maps using GIS software and assisting in the production of reports.  Work may be done in the field (species monitoring) or be based entirely in an office setting, compiling the information collected by others.

The Conservation Coordinator, who will report to both TNC urban forestry staff and USFS scientists, will 1) develop and implement urban tree health assessment data collection protocols and 2) develop training and outreach materials related to this and other Urban Field Station network research efforts. Developing and implementing data collection protocols may involve refining data management protocols and validating data with on-the-ground evaluation of trees. Tasks related to outreach and training materials involve synthesizing existing protocols into public-facing materials that can be used to inform the public about TNC’s THM/EPD and Urban Field Station programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Work with TNC and USFS staff to manipulate Microsoft Access databases and R code to integrate existing data with a tree health assessment Apple/Android application for handheld devices (app). This will involve working closely with app programmers.
  • Work with TNC and USFS staff to conduct field checks of street trees to validate and resolve tree location issues (e.g., New York City (To be confirmed)).
  • Compile and analyze validation data and write reports.
  • Develop and refine public-facing outreach and training materials.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 2 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience handling standard business communications.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access database construction and programming and R coding.
  • Experience with tree data collection in urban environments, including strong tree identification skills.
  • Experience writing scientific materials for public audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Driver’s license.
  • Ability to navigate urban environments by driving, walking and/or using public transportation.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
  • 2 to 4 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number of sources, and work independently.
  • Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability.
  • Ability to plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities.
  • Android and Apple app programming experience.
  • Website programming and design experience.
  • Video and photo editing experience.
  • Experience with document publication and layout (e.g., Adobe InDesign, MS Publisher).
