Our Director of Copywriting position provides an exciting opportunity for a strong promotional writer with experience thinking conceptually and executing tactically across websites, digital products, print materials, email campaigns and more. As the Director of Copywriting you will create and execute messaging strategy for content across all media that drive users to take action in support of our audiences’ needs and our organizational goals. You will also ensure the tone, style, structure, and editorial voice of Teach For America’s products, are aligned to our organizational mission, priorities and brand.  In addition to producing content on tight deadlines, the Director of Copywriting will translate organizational messages and campaigns into digitally-innovative, engaging content for Teach For America’s audience of prospects, alumni, corps members, donors, and staff, and thrives on telling stories that strengthen our network and rally the next generation of corps members. 

The Director of Copywriting will report to the Managing Director of Content Strategy.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Source, write, and edit stories that are compelling, shareable, and data-driven for Teach For America national web, email, social, and print channels while ensuring brand integrity
  • Implement content strategy across all digital channels (web, social, and email)
  • Ensure all content that you publish is properly edited, quality controlled, and upholds Teach For America’s strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Collaborate with internal partner teams and stakeholders to understand business goals and core audience preferences, using those to inform and align content decisions
  • Partner closely with the Insights team to determine what content is resonating with our audiences and how to iterate and optimize it to achieve our goals
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including Teach For America’s regions, to advance digital storytelling and best practices across the organization
  • Contribute to brainstorming and creative brief development for new copy/content campaigns and projects.
  • Implement templates to be used by other departments to ensure brand tone and voice are well executed
  • Collaborate with other copywriters to develop, edit, and optimize content on a daily basis
  • Manage and follow a content calendar for distribution to increase brand awareness for Teach For America and our audiences
  • Apply marketing research, development tools, and methods to learn and understand emerging trends and technologies and to communicate this knowledge clearly and concisely
  • Advocate for and operate under an agile/Lean UX environment with confidence
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required.
Skills/Experience: 

Prior Experience

  • 6-8 years of writing/curating/editing for digital at an agency, not-for-profit, or in a complex corporate context with a large national or multi-national organization; experience at an organization with a regional or distributed model preferred
  • A strong writing portfolio that exemplifies a thoughtful approach to communications writing for diverse audiences (experience with multicultural marketing helpful)
  • Previous experience in managing daily communications and ongoing marketing campaigns
  • Experience with content marketing for web, social media marketing, and email marketing
  • Experience delivering innovative, highly polished marketing content from concept to finished work strongly preferred

Skills

  • Working knowledge of Drupal CMS and HTML
  • Passionate about educational equity as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness
  • Able to think big, generate ideas and drive solutions to complex problems in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • An exceptional writer and oral communicator, including the skills to write in others’ voices and in edit others’ work
  • Skilled in the art of persuasion, with a deep sense of humility and openness to the perspectives of others
  • Able to maintain a sense of possibility in the face of obstacles, and balances both short- and long-term results

Work Demands

  • National travel for in-person meetings will vary throughout the year, but is estimated to include an average of 1 trip per month; some weekend and evening work expected.
