The Downtown Oakland YMCA is seeking a dynamic Director of Health and Fitness who is committed to developing/implementing innovative programming to achieve the mission & vision of the YMCA of the East Bay, its strategies and its focus of Healthy Living for All. This individual will oversee our Health and Fitness Department and is responsible for leading, developing, managing, supervising and coordinating the Health and Fitness Department, which includes, Group Exercise Department, Strength and Cardiovascular Training Fitness Area, and Personal Training.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Hires, leads, trains, and develops Fitness Coaches, Personal Trainers and Group Exercise Staff. Develop and implement strategies to cultivate a member-focused team, and motivate staff to achieve goals.
  • Develops and manages Health and Fitness Department financial budgets. Responsible for monthly income/expense reports, and the collection and reporting of all department budget numbers.
  • Drives, tracks and reports on key department metrics. Reviews and evaluates all current programs. Regularly updates programmatic offerings to meet program standards.
  • Designs and implements new Health and Fitness department programs in accordance with Branch and Association goals. Develops programs and program objectives, and maintains high quality program standards for designated program areas.
  • Supports Membership growth and retention by responding to emerging programs, fostering quality relationships with Members, and ensuring excellent member service and member responsiveness.
  • Drives the integration and cross promotion of all programs across the branch to maximize participation and engagement.
  • Coordinates with maintenance to ensure the safety and upkeep of all health, well-being & fitness program equipment.
  • Provides leadership with Branch-wide special events. Provides leadership in all facets of the Annual Branch Community Campaign, and other fundraising initiatives as assigned.
  • Attends appropriate trainings and meetings to enhance the knowledge of the Health and Fitness industry.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Current certifications through ACE, NASM, ACSM, or other equivalent certifications for personal training and or group exercise. Ability to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED certifications within 90 days of hire.
  • Specific knowledge and ability in fitness instruction as well as preventative measures in health and fitness.
  • 3-5 years in supervisory role. Experience in leading teams.
  • Successful track record in fitness operations, staff leadership, group programming and Member Service.
  • Experience and success in increasing program participation.
  • Ability to anticipate, solve and resolve problems.
  • A Change Oriented mind set.
  • Ability to relate to and communicate effectively with diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to use a computer for extended periods of time and communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
  • Must be able to sit and reach, and to move around the work environment.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust.
  • Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents.
  • Must have mobility to quickly respond to emergencies.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with moderate noise.
  • All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationship over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office
