As part of The United Nation Foundation’s ongoing effort to deepen our alignment with UN priorities, build our capacity for thought leadership on policy issues, and strengthen collaboration across the Foundation, the UN Foundation is developing a Policy Planning Team. The Deputy Director, Policy Planning will work with the Head of Policy Planning in a variety of functions to help build this effort and to connect, leverage, and support policy-related work across the organization.
The Deputy Director, Policy Planning, working across the Foundation, will help track and scope emerging, cross-cutting, or time-limited issues and initiatives; lend surge support to select Foundation priorities; and work to create a hub for integrating policy thinking, forward planning, and guidance across the Foundation. The Deputy Director will work with policy-oriented colleagues in the NY and DC offices, including our communications team. S/he will track sustained policy developments related to international cooperation and global development to help complement ongoing work already taking place in the Foundation. This role offers an opportunity to work on a broad range of issues relating to multilateralism and global development in a fast-paced environment, and to scope new, emerging, and cross-cutting areas of focus.
- Foster collaborative policy development and produce evidence-based policy analysis on a variety of issues
- Provide surge support across the Foundation in key areas where there are gaps, connections to make across
- issues, or priorities that need dedicated attention, ensuring that this work complements other policy and advocacy priorities in place
- Research, draft, and contribute to select content and policy-oriented correspondence, publications, and other materials
- Track sustained major policy developments affecting UNF outside the UN (G7, G20, IFI’s, OECD, select bilateral donor developments efforts)
- Build and maintain relationships with think tanks, research centers, and external content partners.
- Support the Head of Policy Planning on special initiatives and projects
- Research and track over-the-horizon issues and policy opportunities for the Foundation.
- Collaborate with communications department on content opportunities and editorial planning
- Other duties as assigned
- Minimum of 6-10 years of experience and expertise in international relations, foreign policy, policy development or strategic planning, with excellent knowledge of the UN system, including the SDGs
- Proven ability to research, analyze, synthesize and write on a variety of issues related to multilateralism, global development and foreign policy at a high analytical level
- Successful experience working across offices and with a team of professionals in a fast-paced environment and co-lead on discrete projects and assignments
- Strategic thinker with ability to plan, prioritize, and execute a variety of projects simultaneously
- Self-starter, flexible, team player
- Sense of humor a must
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills
- Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
