The Community Programs Director will lead the successful development, marketing, and implementation of programming and services to all Community Programs, youth, and families.  The Director will over see the day-to-day operations of both the Day Camp as well as the After School site at Tri Valley Elementary School through the fall, winter, and spring.  The Director will focus on community outreach and host events and programs for the local population.  The Director will represent Frost Valley in the local community and be the “face” of Frost Valley to parents, campers, students and community partners.  The Director will work to ensure that all Community Programs will be delivered at the highest standards to meet the mission of the not only the Department, but the YMCA, the expectations of the staff and customers, all applicable state, county and American Camp Association standards, and the best interests of Frost Valley YMCA.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work with the Camp Registration Office to contact and enroll Day Campers and After School participants throughout the year to meet and/or exceed budget while maintaining excellent program quality.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department to develop annual marketing, promotion, and advertising for the Day Camp and After School programs.  Participate in the implementation and management of all marketing strategies.  Attend monthly Marketing meetings.
  • Host Day Camp open houses and/or tours; attend tabling events throughout the local community to boost Camp enrollment; orchestrate mailings, phone-a-thons, newsletters etc.  Also utilize technology such as Facebook, Twitter, e-newsletters and blogs to market programs to connect to FV families.
  • Develop an annual budget.  Project income, control expenses and purchasing, and prepare monthly financial reports.  Meet monthly with the CFO to review revenue and expenses.
  • Oversee Frost Valley’s Day Camp.  This includes providing hands on supervision for all Day Camp programs.  Assume primary responsibility for the safety and welfare of all Day Campers.  Have a physical presence onsite and be on call for Day Camp as needed.   
  • Develop and implement the camp schedule for the Day Camp.  This includes development of lesson plans and Program Quality Standards for all activities offered.  This also includes meals, transportation, and offsite day trips.
  • Create and integrate new and innovative programs for Day Camp and After School.  Focus on Frost Valley core values and mission, as well as health and wellness utilizing HEPA standards, and STEM activities. 
  • Be a liaison for families and campers.  Function as a primary point of contact for Day Camp, After School and other Community Programs.  Provide excellent customer service through face to face contact, phone calls, emails, and letters for Day Camp and After School participants.  Build year-round relationships with campers and families.
  • Review, update, and edit all correspondence and materials.
  • Oversee Frost Valley’s After School program.  Assume primary responsibility for the safety and welfare of all After School participants.  Have a physical presence onsite as needed. 
  • Schedule, create, plan and execute several full day programs for local school children during holidays, as well as a Spring Break Day Camp and Winter Break Day Camp.  This will include all logistics such as transportation and meals.
  • Schedule, create, plan and execute several community oriented special events such as Healthy Kids Day, Giant Pumpkin Party, Trunk or Treat, the Community Holiday Dinner, etc- TBD
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate all seasonal or part-time Day Camp and After School staff.  This will include but not be limited to site supervisors, child care staff, seasonal leadership staff and summer counselors/staff.   
  • Take care of scheduling and payroll for all Community Programs staff.
  • Ensure staff compliance with all Personnel Policies.  Use progressive discipline as needed.
  • Inspire and lead your staff team.  Responsible for maintaining and improving staff morale within Community Programs.  Develop staff through ongoing training and mentoring. 
  • Insure that Day Camp and the After School site meet or exceed all standards set forth by the ACA, the Health Department, the State of New York, and YMCA of the USA.  Maintain Day Camp license with the Board of Health.  Maintain Child Care license with the State of NY Department of Child and Family Services.   
  • Work with the Camp Registration Office to maintain all camper paperwork, such as registration forms, financial assistance records, permission forms, releases, emergency information, etc.
  • Work with the After Care site supervisor to maintain all participant paperwork and staff files, such as registration forms, financial assistance records, permission forms, releases, physicals, emergency information, training records, etc.
  • Act as a liaison for all Day Camp partnership programs.  This would entail being a point of contact as well as organizing and integrating groups such as the Spanish Immersion program, Inclusion Day Camp, and any new partnerships.
  • Assist to help raise money to support Day Camp scholarships as well as allocating funding to the campers.  Work with the Development Department to secure and execute program related grants.
  • Responsible to manage communication with all support departments in relation to Day Camp activities.  This includes Food Service, Housekeeping, Maintenance and Grounds, Health Services, and IT.
  • Be an active member of the Program Director Team at Frost Valley.  Be prepared to attend staff meetings, help shape camp policies, and contribute to the success of all Frost Valley Program Departments.
  • Responsible for executing the shared 2022 Frost Valley Vision.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood, Child Development, Education or a related field is required, Master’s degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must be 25 years of age or older
  • Minimum of five years of experience working with youth including part-time or seasonal positions
  • Prior experience working in a camp or YMCA program
  • Experience supervising day camps, child care, resident camps, or recreational programs 
  • Proven success with camper retention and recruitment, staff supervision, budget management, program development and implementation of new programs, and leadership of programs for youth 
  • Must be a reliable, detail oriented, motivated and safety conscious individual
  • Possess excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Be a strong leader and be able to work well with a team of others; experience hiring and supervising staff is required
  • Must hold current first aid and CPR certification or obtain upon employment
  • Have a clean, valid US drivers license with a current CDL license or obtain one upon employment
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Thinsoft
  • Be able to work flexible hours that may include evenings and weekends as needed
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $47,000.00 - $52,000.00
