The Digital Writer/Editor (Explorers) will play an important role in bringing this vision to life in support of current and future digital and mobile initiatives at the Society. We create engaged and impactful relationships with our various stakeholder communities, including Explorers, Educators and Students, and Key Influencers (Foundations, Policy Makers, Donors, etc.) across website, mobile and social channels. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Digital Writer/Editor enthusiastically and pro-actively works to deepen engagement with the Explorer community and will collaborate closely with Audience Engagement, Product, Marketing, Impact/Programs and other business units to directly contribute towards NGS’s mission to change the world. As a key, cross-functional member of the NGS Digital Team, the Digital Journalist will work with the Director of Content Development to help develop, select, curate and optimize content for NGS owned and operated channels to achieve our goals. He/she will use creativity, data and collaboration to activate specific high-impact audiences surrounding our Explorers across various owned and operated channels.

Responsibilities include:

  • Build and engage Explorer online community utilizing a combined creative and data-driven approach. Collaborate closely with Audience Engagement team as it relates to search, social media and content distribution (20%)
  • Assist Director of Content Development to develop, select, curate and prioritize, frame, package and optimize Explorer content for NGS owned and operated channels. Includes writing, editing and creative packaging of content – everything from headlines, images, video, etc. (20%)
  • Research information, assist with fact-checking, write additional headline variations/options, etc.
  • Ensure engaging digital content for Explorer programs and channels with brand and voice consistency across platform-intentioned content. Implement processes for Explorer related digital content creation, curation, quality assurance and publishing. Collaborate with a cross-functional team in the operations of an integrated Explorer editorial calendar and associated content creation and deployment. (20%)
  • Communicate and work effectively with executives and cross-functional leads in product, marketing and impact/program teams. (20%)
  • Work with the analytics team to develop KPIs to measure, report, test, iterate and optimize content performance. (10%)
  • Serve as a digital content subject matter expert within the company as it relates to our digital platforms and communities. Use his/her deep understanding of digital content to enable world-class engagement and social media programs with the audiences in targeted segments. Work closely with stakeholders and other teams throughout NGS to optimize content for our social/digital platforms and channels (10%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, business, communications, marketing, mathematics, economics, political science, civics, sociology or related field.
Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

  • 3 to 5 years relevant industry experience, with at least three years of direct, hands-on experience in a social/digital editorial or content development role.

Knowledge and Skills Required 

A proven writer and editor of social/digital content, with demonstrated success building targeted, engaged and activated audiences for brands, companies or NGOs.

  • Experience in editorial role at a major brand, company or NGO
  • Exceptional writer and copy editor who displays sound editorial judgment. Includes strong editorial sense of voice and content quality.
  • Strong content management experience across desktop web, mobile web and mobile apps. Track record of developing and delivering successful digital content to grow and engage audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage others
  • Exceptional skill at clear, concise, and compelling communication.
  • Data-driven when it comes to decision-making.
  • Highly motivated, out-of-the-box thinker who has direct editorial/content as well as an excellent understanding of digital platforms, social media marketing and/or community management.
  • Experience working directly with content management, digital publishing, analytics and social media tools
  • Experience working with business owners to develop a deep understanding of customer needs.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross functional teams in product, 
    marketing, impact and social media groups. 
  • Pro-active self-starter and a “can do” problem solver who thrives with hard challenges in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple simultaneous complex projects to successful completion. Strong planning, prioritization and project management abilities. Delivers on time and on budget.
