The Project Manager, Dangermond Preserve will manage a new Conservancy flagship preserve, establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within the geography in which the preserve is located, and design and implement an adaptive management plan for the preserve. Responsibilities include developing or supporting colleagues in developing key partnerships with public entities, the local native American community, the ranching community, research universities and diverse private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. Management of the preserve will require innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs, engage local community support for local conservation efforts, provide controlled public access and negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect the property’s natural communities. Also, the Project Manager will support Conservancy colleagues in developing conservation priorities and long-term conservation strategies.
- Responsible for developing and implementing an adaptive management plan for the Preserve, including a ranch management plan for conservation grazing.
- Collaborate with external partners to develop and implement a controlled public access program, including an educational program for school aged children.
- Build cooperation from outside parties, including numerous public entities, the local ranching community, neighbors and other diverse stakeholders
- Develop and implement a hospitality program for donors, stakeholders and other interested parties.
- Lead and manage a cross matrixed team or project to support and improve conservation efforts.
- Support and monitor restoration projects.
- Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. Establish clear directions and set stretch objectives.
- Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the program while controlling costs and administering budgets.
- Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet programmatic needs.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Manage a diverse portfolio of contracts, for maintenance, management support, research, capital improvements and other purposes.
- Frequently makes independent decision based on analysis, experience, and context.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
- Experience negotiating with agencies, private entities and people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-cultural and cross-cultural experience appreciated
- 5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
- Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives or related field.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising or grant writing.
- Politically savvy, and able to work with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
