Managing Director, Growth, Strategy and Development

The MD, Growth, Strategy and Development will provide critical strategic and operations support to the Executive Director to ensure we are able to achieve our team’s priorities.  This individual will oversee the development of a comprehensive, integrated Development, District Strategy, and Talent Development Plan, including our priorities, narrative & messages, campaigns, and timelines. S/he will also support a team-wide calendar and ensure collaboration across the team. 
 In this role, you will become a trusted advisor to the Executive Director, and the rest of the Alabama regional team.  Your projects will center around strategic planning, gathering and synthesizing progress on annual and quarterly measures of success, team-wide professional development and engagement.  You will regularly interact with constituent groups and the broader organization. You excel as the chief development leader, systems-creator, strategic thinker, project manager and self-starter with a strong sense of poise. You will report to the Executive Director in Alabama.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategic capacity to the Executive Director: (20%)

  • Play a key role with the ED in the strategic planning process, helping the ED ensure that there are strong systems in place for communication and that all streams (national, program, development, operations) are working under a single umbrella aligned to our strategic plan
  • Plan and execute special projects that are critical to our team’s priorities, including analyzing and synthesizing data as necessary
  • Serve as a key contact to other teams:  fielding questions, coordinating projects, and downloading key information for the ED
  • Thought partner with ED and members of the marketing and communications team
  • Draft internal and external communications and marketing on behalf of the ED (e.g., emails, memos, PowerPoint presentations)
  • Plan team quarterly step backs with ED
  • Facilitate the collaboration and information-sharing between team members
  • Regularly assess and report on team wide progress to goals, identify what is driving and impeding progress, and developing solutions to address gaps and adjust course as necessary
  • Informs key regional decisions and advises Executive Director

Development & Fundraising (55%)

  • Craft, evaluate and execute on strategy to achieve the region’s $2.3M annual funding goals
  • Analyze past regional performance, current and future regional funding needs, and regional landscape to set ambitious, yet feasible, donation and donor retention goals
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current and prospective funders ($50,000 and below) including individual givers, corporate giving sources, and foundations
  • Facilitate Executive Director strategic involvement in regional fundraising efforts that best leverages her time and talent
  • Support Regional Advisory Board involvement in development initiatives
  • Inspire the Executive Director, Regional Advisory Board, and other senior staff to embrace your vision for their unique roles in development operation.
  • Partner with Executive Director to prepare for and participate in board meetings,  partner with board members on development-specific projects or activities, and communicate with board members as needed
  • Oversee and execute multiple development related events of various scales
  • Oversee the execution of strong external messaging, marketing materials, and communications
  • Manage a team of  two direct reports (Managers, Development)  towards achieving their goals, with an emphasis on strong coaching, development, and cultural leadership

Regional Team Leadership and Engagement (15%)

  • The MD, Development, Growth and Strategy  sits on the Regional Leadership Team, attending weekly LT meetings, and full-day stepbacks once every two months
  • Operates as a culture leader for the entire team, embodying our core values, collaborating across teams, and mentoring staff members
  • Leads LT through annual planning, and long-term regional strategic planning
  • Represents our work externally as a leader of Teach For America
  •  Prepare for meetings with leaders across TFA by preparing agendas, PowerPoint presentations, and accurate data reports
  • Understand and effectively communicate Teach For America-Alabama’s programmatic initiatives, goals, and impact externally and internally.
  • Participate in selection of incoming corps members 2-3 times per year
  • Participate in regional matriculation efforts multiple times per year
  • Participate in and complete staff meeting pre-work + attend bi-weekly regional meetings
  • Support and participate in regional events

Talent Development: (15%)

  • Play a central role in fostering whole communications team culture, professional development and engagement:
    • Partner with Human Assets Partner and Leadership team to ensure annual talent needs of region are met
    • Support Executive Director in creating a strong culture plan for region to ensure strong year over year retention and strength of team
    • Strategize around additional professional development needs that apply to the entire team and that sub-teams aren’t already creating
    • Drive own professional development with support from manager and others
    • Engage in community opportunities that have personal meaning/connection
  • District Strategy:
    • Identify and partner with key universities to ensure strong certification plan is in place in partnership with the Director, Program Continuum in region
    • Partner with AED/OC and Director of Program Continuum to create plan for Spring and Summer Hiring Fairs
    • Partner with school districts to ensure 100% CMs are hired prior to beginning of each school year
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 

Prior Experience

  • 5-7 +  years of work experience required
  • Teach For America staff experience required
  • Consulting or other strategy-focused experience preferred
  • Experience/knowledge in marketing, communications, or community partnerships a plus

Work Demands

  • Travel likely about 1-2 times quarter for team retreats, conferences and other professional development
  • Attend evening events 3-4 times a month
  • Attend Teacher Professional Developments during one Saturday a month
