To supervise and run the Aquatic department in a safe and fun manner. Oversee all swimming programs run in the YMCA pools and at offsite locations. Hire and manage all aquatic staff including all lifeguards, swim instructors, AOA instructors, swim team coaches and volunteers.

Effect on end Results:

This position ensures that aquatics programs are high quality, operated within budget, and provided by a competent staff.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops, and manages aquatic budget by tracking monthly income and expenses in all aquatic cost centers.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules, directs, evaluates and supervises staff and volunteers for all aquatic programs. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Train all staff both in and out of the building in appropriate CPR/AED skills and maintain staff certifications and copies for filing. 
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are followed, including pool rules and regulations, pool policies and procedures, state guidelines, and insurance guidelines 
  • Ensures that all aquatic program areas equipment and supplies are maintained in an orderly and safe manner.
  • Promotes aquatic programs by developing and distributing all information.
  • Maintains program quality by performing evaluations of programs.
  • Help supervise with all emergency procedures, and risk management
  • Assist with agency-wide projects
  • Participate in YMCA functions, such as annual meetings, fundraisers, etc.
  • Turn in and process all brochure information.
  • Perform miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of supervisory experience in an aquatic program
  • Posses current Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid base level and instructor level certifications.
  • Promote an enthusiastic, cheerful, exciting, safe, environment.
  • Follow and promote the YMCA Philosophy
  • Relate well to participants, parents and staff members.
  • Show leadership, maturity, and self-control
  • Ability to train swim instructors.
  • Demonstrate strong skills in both swimming and aquatic safety.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to complete all of the following skills.
  • A 500 yard swim 200 yard free, 200 yards breaststroke, 100  yard choice between the 2.
  • Swim 20 yards retrieve a 10 pound object and return 20 yards, Stride jump.
  • Compact jump. Approach stroke front and breaststroke.
  • Extension assist from the deck and a swimming extension rescue.
  • Active, passive, and multiple victim rear rescues (victim could weight up to 500 pounds).
  • Feet first surface dives. Submerged victim rescue. Front and rear head hold escapes.
  • Removal from the water. Head, neck, and back immobilization on land.
  • Head splint technique facedown and face up in deep and shallow water.
  • Head & chin support face up, face down in deep and shallow water as well as submerged spinal.
  • Back boarding spinal in deep and shallow water. Using personal protective equipment.
  • Primary survey, Rescue breathing for an adult, infant, and child.
  • Conscious chocking for an adult, infant, and child. Unconscious chocking for an adult, infant, and child. CPR for an adult, infant, and child.
  • Two rescuer CPR. Using a bag-valve- mask.
  • Controlling bleeding. Applying a sling and binder.
