Under the direction of the Director of Health and Wellness, the Assistant Director of Health and Wellness ensures the successful operation of the West Suburban YMCA’s Health and Wellness programs including program development, staff supervision, community relations, collaborations and financial results. Oversee the development and operations of Health and Wellness.  Recruits, trains and supports selected staff. Develops, organizes and implements high quality, member-focused YMCA wellness programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and management of operating plans to promote program and/or membership growth for the Health and Wellness program.  Executes strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA. Reviews and updates procedures and communicates changes to staff.
  • Monitors monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled.
  • Assists with the development and control of department budgets related to the position.
  • Ensures operational growth of the YMCA Wellness program through program expansion, member / program recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development and collaborations.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Responsible for initial hiring/onboarding paperwork, reference checks etc. Facilitates communication and provides leadership. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Motivates and energizes the Wellness Staff to be Cause Driven Leaders. Leads by example. Organizes trainings including but not limited to personal training sales, Listen First, etc.
  • Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/ boards as assigned.
  • Assists the Director in the compliance with state and local regulations. Ensures that program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
  • Ensures high quality member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations and ongoing training of staff.
  • Support medically based wellness programming such as Livestrong at the YMCA.
  • Provides assistance or requests for reports to committees, Board of Directors, Vice President and the President/ CEO.
  • Coordinate and/or participate in special events and activities to enhance the member experience and volunteer opportunities.
  • Assists in the implementation and oversight for program evaluation to guarantee faithfulness to the Y’s cause, and a high quality commitment to YMCA standards and successful financial outcomes.
  • Assist with the operational growth of the YMCA’s Health and Wellness program through program expansion, member/ program recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, off –site venues and collaborations.
  • In direct member service 20 hours per week.
  • Responsible for monthly staff trainings for Wellness staff and ensure consistent safety/ emergency response training is performed.
  • Actively support the Annual Campaign and be a department staff leader towards a successful team achievement.
  • Helps to create and schedule Group Exercise classes, fitness classes, staff schedules and personal training schedules. 
  • Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Assist with ensuring all group exercise instructors and Wellness Staff are in compliance with the minimum education, certification, and/or continuing education requirements of the department.
  • Assist with the general management, cleanliness and upkeep of the group exercise and spinning studios, Wellness Center and related equipment.
  • Conduct inventory and order all operating supplies for the department.
  • Assist with marketing collateral for the Wellness Department and follow association guidelines.
  • Compile program statistics as requested. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  • Ensure that proper training and growth opportunities are available to all staff and meet the requirements of the YMCA Leadership Competency Development Guide.
  • Ensure that all department and programs under your supervision meet the highest standards of program and member service quality and safety.
  • This is a seven-day/week department and will require a flexible schedule to maintain consistency and delivery of programs and services. Must be flexible and adaptable. Weekly schedule may include one weekend day and some evening or early morning hours. Please prepare to observe your department at all hours of operation on a regular basis. 
  • Responsible for collecting department timesheets, tallying hours, and submitting on a biweekly basis.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, recreation, business or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimal qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated experience and knowledge in the administration and management of wellness programs. 
  • This position requires solid supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Strong human relation skills’ including the ability to foster and maintain a positive work environment with other staff, volunteers and members.
  • The ability to make decisions and manage conflicts is an expectation.
  • This position requires leadership skills in the area of fitness, wellness and human relations and the ability to manage programs consistent with member needs and interests.  Expectations include the ability to successfully:
    • A national recognized Personal Training Certification.
    • Understanding of the nature and purpose of YMCA and the respective roles of volunteerism and staff.
    • CPR and First Aid certifications required.
    • Other certifications necessary for related field.
    • Prioritize workload in accordance with department, branch and organizational goals
    • Integrate and lead groups of diverse individuals and departments in collaborative activities aimed at advancing wellness throughout the association
    • Develop strong relationships leading up, across and down in the organization
    • Manage conflicts as needed, striving for mutually agreeable resolutions whenever possible
    • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
    • Currently holds or is working towards Y USA Team Leader Certification.

  • A national recognized Personal Training Certification
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required
