Under the direction of the Group Executive Director, the Aquatics Director leads the administration of branch policies, procedures and programs within the Aquatics Department. The Director provides leadership to all aquatics personnel within the assigned branch and is ultimately responsible for all pool and aquatic safety elements, as well as pool maintenance and upkeep.  The Director will collaborate closely with other branch leaders and lead a successful aquatics department which delivers mission-driven programs and services in an environment that is centered on member service.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage and supervise program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establish new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule and direct personnel and volunteers as needed.  Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensure records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Responsible for the supervision and scheduling for the effective use of the aquatic facilities, providing assistance with assigned areas.
  • Participate on the Association’s Aquatic Task Team and incorporates best practices in the branch.
  • Conduct audits and ensure proper maintenance of pools. Secure and schedule pool facilities. Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Conduct lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  • Create and schedule swim classes, water fitness classes, and swim team practices
    and meets.
  • Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for the Community Outreach Campaign within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Develop and monitor program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Assist in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Share the voice of the member/community back to management team with goal of meeting needs of our members and having meaningful impact to the community.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in physical education/recreation/sports management or five years of applicable experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum one year experience working in an Aquatics supervisory position.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include:  YMCA Lifeguard Instructor, YMCA Pool Operator or NC State Certified Pool Operator, Child Abuse Prevention Training and New-Hire Orientation.
  • Must have current CPR-PR or BLS, First Aid, AED, Blood Bourne Pathogen, or able to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Excellent conflict resolution and problem-solving skills required. Proven ability to coach staff in these areas preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, problem solve and possess effective time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and relate to a diverse group of individuals.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of safe and proper techniques for all equipment/ chemicals used in the pool area.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel and PowerPoint.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to work irregular hours.
  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  • Ability to physically obtain and maintain required certifications.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push and lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to perform duties inside and outside (environments include humidity, head, cold, and inclement weather conditions).
  • Ability to maintain continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking.
  • Will be exposed to cleaning supplies.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Hourly: $15.89 - $19.86
