Provides investigation assistance and other support to AARP Legal Counsel for the Elderly in the District of Columbia in representing clients at risk of foreclosure for unpaid real property taxes, condo fees, or mortgage. Works directly with LCE clients and under the supervision of Supervisory Legal Aid Attorney (Consumer) and accepts case assignments/gets direction from the attorneys in the unit.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Work under the guidance of the consumer law attorney(s) to review foreclosure court filings, real property tax records, and mortgage documents, complete loan modification applications on behalf of LCE clients, draft and file court pleadings, obtain records, and meet with LCE clients;
- Support case handling of unit attorneys by assisting with litigation file organization and preparing case notes, and letters;
- Assist with outreach and education to District homeowners;
- For client with reverse mortgages, communicate with clients’ health care providers to obtain documentation and negotiate repayment plans with lenders;
- Assist clients client in applying for real property tax benefits; and
- Meet administrative tasks (e.g. case reporting, case notes, case closures, grant reporting, timekeeping) in a timely and accurate fashion.
Educational Background:
Bachelor of Arts degree with social work or law related experience at minimum, experience as a housing counselor is a plus;
Skills/Experience:
- Ability and interest in working with diverse populations;
- Good organizational and communication skills;
- Amenability to local travel/knowledge of the District of Columbia;
- Commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP and to the representation of individuals with low incomes;
- Excellent organizational and communication skills;
- Commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP and Legal Counsel for the Elderly and to the representation of individuals with low incomes;
- Ability to collaborate with staff internally and with other organizations around AARP priority issues; and
- Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
