The Data Visualization Advisor will be an integral part of AARP Research providing direct data visualization design and development support across AARP Research, as well as Policy, Research and International as needed. They will help to drive a culture of effective insights in AARP Research through their work, and will collaborate across the Research group to improve the visual storytelling and mentor their colleagues with regard to conceptualizing, designing, implementing, and sharing data visualization for various types of research projects. This position reports to the Director of Communication and Creative Resources. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Works with Research colleagues to distill qualitative and quantitative insights to communicate compelling stories, and identifies relationships in data to assist in providing insights
  • Collaborates with Research teams to transform and store data for use in modeling and visualizations
  • Develops and deploys new data visualizations
  • Creates platform templates for data visualizations, as needed, and helps colleagues to build their own visualizations
  • Produces charts, graphs, infographics, dashboards, etc. to support knowledge acquisition and decision-making 
  • Deploys visualizations using a variety of technologies suitable to the end users (e.g. web, mobile, print)
  • Evaluates data accuracy, completeness, timeliness and stability to establish repeatable, sustainable processes to maintain
  • Mentors others on data visualization process and needs
  • Works with the Director of Communication & Creative Services to effectively assess relevant software and platforms for departmental use
  • Stays abreast of the latest techniques, technologies, and trends in data visualization; and works with the Director of Communication & Creative Services and other AARP Research leadership to externally promotes AARP as a leader in the field
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s in a relevant discipline, such as data visualization or science, communication, economics, or computer science;
Skills/Experience: 
  • 6+ years of experience in data visualization and analysis; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to adhere to tight deadlines and work accurately in a fast-paced, complex environment.
  • Solid project management experience, and ability to work concurrently on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to forge effective internal and external partnerships across groups and departments
  • Technical proficiency in Tableau and other relevant visualization tools, and database tools such as MySQL/SQL
