Associate - Disability Rights Divisions

The Disability Rights Divisions of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative support to our team. The Disability Rights Division defends and promotes the rights of people with disabilities, and works to mainstream disability rights within the broader human rights agenda. Priorities include the right to be free from discrimination, violence and arbitrary detention, on topics such as violence against women and children with disabilities, access to education and health care, institutionalization, legal capacity, political participation and the impact of armed conflict. This position is based in New York and reports to the Director of the Disability Rights Division, based in Brussels.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide day-to-day administrative support to the Disability Rights Division, such as scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, making travel arrangements, managing divisional expenses, tracking project timelines and deadlines, and responding to requests for information;
  • Act as a liaison and maintain communications among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;
  • Assist with editing, formatting, coordinating, and distributing materials such as translations, news releases, reports, briefing papers, op eds, publications and web content;
  • Assist with advocacy work, including scheduling official meetings, maintaining relationships and communication with partners, and building and maintaining contact databases;
  • Assist with news monitoring and dissemination, including through social media;
  • Assist with planning and executing roundtables and special events with visitors, NGOs, and government officials;
  • Recruit, coordinate, and mentor interns; and
  • Carry out other duties as required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, social science, or a related field is required.
Skills/Experience: 

Experience: 

  • A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required. Experience and familiarity with disability rights issues and human rights is highly desirable.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  • Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks are essential.
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision, and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
  • Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  • Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications and social media is required.
  • Demonstrated interest in international human rights and commitment to disability rights and inclusion is highly desirable.
Compensation/Benefits: 
  • Salary range starts at $45,150. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year.
Additional Information: 

Applicants for this position must possess current US work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.
