The Ecological Restoration Crew Leader is a 6-month full-time, short-term position based out of the Northeast Ohio Field Office located near Rock Creek Ohio. The Ecological Restoration Crew Leader is part of a 3-person team that supports the implementation of ecological restoration projects throughout Northeast Ohio. The Crew Leader will coordinate with the Central Lake Erie Basin Project Manager to develop workplans for the Team and oversee and direct the daily activities of the Crew. This is primarily a field position working with project partners to survey and control invasive species throughout project sites in Northeast Ohio through chemical and mechanical applications. S/he will also be responsible for equipment preparation, use, and maintenance; use of GPS unit and related devices; accurate record keeping and reporting; and other responsibilities as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Develop workplans and schedules with Project Manager and oversee and direct day to day activities of Crew.
- Use chemical and manual methods to control invasive, non-native plant species.
- Use GPS and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify, record and map non-native, invasive species’ presence and locations throughout project sites.
- Communicate with crew members, partners, and the public to ensure efficient, effective and safe working conditions
- Use and maintain equipment, vehicles, trailers, GPS units and tools.
- Use of Argo amphibious vehicle in water and on land.
- Distribute educational materials and answer questions from the general public.
- Navigate natural areas with map and compass.
- Analyze data and preparing reports
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Develops workplans and direct day to day activities of the Crew.
- Responsible for purchases, record keeping and reporting.
- May work with infrequent supervision.
- Works as part of a team and does not supervise staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience recognizing plant species, particularly by winter twig ID
- Experience operating various types of equipment.
- Experience performing physical work.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Valid driver’s license
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma and 1 year training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. Ability to recognize plant species as required, to perform invasive species management activities.
- Experience overseeing a crew or work team.
- Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; Argo, herbicide sprayers, hand tools, loppers, brush cutters, two-way radio, etc.)
- Ability to follow instructions from supervisor and colleagues.
- Ability to perform physical work, often under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
- Experience using computers with Microsoft software applications and to access internet.
- Experience using hand-held GPS devices to record data and use of database systems for maintaining field records.
