The Global Strategy Associate Director works closely with the Chief Strategy Officer and strategy teams to drive and support the development of high impact conservation strategies in support of The Nature Conservancy’s Shared Conservation Agenda. The posting is open through January 3, 2018.
The Associate Director is an integral member of the Chief Strategy Office, and works with the Chief Strategy Officer to support teams across The Nature Conservancy in the development of effective strategies in service of its Shared Conservation Agenda. In particular, the Associate Director will:
- Assist priority regional and/or global teams in TNC’s Shared Conservation Agenda to develop and implement effective strategies that pursue transformational outcomes.
- Advise teams on active strategy management and capacity building. S/he also develops key topical expertise on issues that support cross-functional or cross-boundary strategy development and management.
- Helps the Chief Strategy Officer implement and run a performance management process that enables TNC to assess progress towards the implementation of its Shared Conservation Agenda conducts business assessments of progress against conservation measures, strategy effectiveness and potential areas for research and development and may prepare materials for Conservation Management Team, Executive Team, Board and Chief Conservation Office meetings.
- May manage and lead small to large-scale complex projects on behalf of the Chief Strategy Officer that may span multiple departments or programs.
S/he has excellent analytic and synthesis skills, which s/he uses to help the CSO synthesis and guide the performance of strategy across TNC. S/he also shows excellent interpersonal skills and through active collaboration, develops relationships across the Conservancy, with global teams, regional teams, the Office of the Chief Scientist, Chief Conservation Office and cross-cutting functions, and supports the development and uptake of technology-based information and management tools. RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Designs, implements and directs complex and diverse projects encompassing multiple programs with guidance from the Chief Strategy Officer.
- Conducts research and analysis.
- Develops reports, presentations and assessments on topics related to strategy development.
- May design, coordinate and lead conservation strategy learning exchanges and conferences.
- Makes strategic decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment.
- Incorporates cross disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
- Significant latitude to deal directly with field management personnel and organizational leadership.
- Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
- Requires willingness and ability to travel up to 75% both domestically and internationally, and to work occasional weekends and evenings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Related field and 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination in a private sector environment, such as management consulting and investment banking, or a strategic and business planning role in a conservation organization or government entity.
- International work experience
- Experience implementing environmental conservation strategies across multiple geographies
- Experience working with a global non-profit
- Experience supporting or co-leading and co-managing complex projects and strategic initiatives in an unstructured environment with a senior level manager.
- Proven project management experience
- 1-2 years experience as a Business Analyst
- Experience developing business plans or major strategy assessments, particularly with conservation forms of valuation, deal structuring, negotiations support, financial modeling and analysis, business planning.
- Experience in developing strategic frameworks for global and large scale conservation strategies
- Excellent time management skills.
- Experience developing end products with software such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, cloud and web based tools including but not limited to WebEx/conferencing software, Skype, Google Hangouts, and Box.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
- Master’s degree.
- Experience developing business plans or major strategy assessments, particularly with conservation forms of valuation, deal structuring, negotiations support, financial modeling and analysis, business planning.
- Fluency in language other than English (e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese).
- Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental and international affairs.
- Willingness to learn and develop expertise in new conservation strategies, economic drivers, management tools, and global affairs.
- Strong team player who can build relationships and work collaboratively across the organization, including with senior management, and with Conservancy partners.
