The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Steward performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management. 

The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Steward will assist in the day-to-day operations at the Muleshoe Ranch Preserve with the primary responsibility the maintenance and upkeep of the Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Headquarters. The steward position will also assist in implementing Preserve management plans to include the systematic collection of conservation related data, and working with State and Federal partners with conservation work on the Preserve. This position will be expected to maintain vehicles, tools and equipment, and operate heavy and dangerous machinery (e.g., tractor and chain saw).

The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Steward is expected to work and live at the Muleshoe Ranch Preserve in a setting that includes a prevalence of rattlesnakes and other natural hazards in housing provided by The Nature Conservancy.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers covering a wide geographic area.     
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.                                                                                           
  • Requires long hours, often alone, in isolated settings.                                                                                                                        
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.                                                                                                  
  • May work under infrequent supervision.
  • Will spend 25% of their time assisting other Nature Conservancy staff on the Lower San Pedro River
Educational Background: 
High school diploma and 1 year’s training or experience in building construction and/or maintenance..     
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience operating various types of equipment.                        
  • Experience performing physical work.                                            
  • Valid driver license

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1 - 2 years experience in landscaping and building maintenance to include trouble shooting and solving simple electrical and plumbing issues.   
  • 1 - 2 years experience in native plant restoration and greenhouse operation.                 
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems and ecological land management principles.  
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc.).
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
  • Ability to manage time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisor and colleagues.
  • PC familiarity, including database knowledge.
