The Southern District YMCA has a long history of providing many communities throughout Southern New Hampshire with outstanding programs and services for youth. The Y’s Camp Lincoln is a traditional summer camp and outdoor education facility offering over 1500 campers the opportunity to engage in healthy activities. More than 750 children are enrolled in 15 before and after school sites through the Y’s child care programs. And just over two years ago, the Y opened the Exeter Area YMCA, a 33,000-square-foot multi-generational health and wellness center, which has seen membership growth that exceeds expectations. The Southern District YMCA is also currently exploring Phase 2 of a capital campaign to add a new aquatics facility to its Exeter location. The YMCA is currently seeking a new leader who will provide strong support for all aspects of the Y’s operations and strategic initiatives.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Professional Qualities and Competencies of the Next Leader: The Y Board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:

Build and Manage the Staff Team:

  • Establish himself/herself as a leader who can hire, motivate, engage, and retain high performing staff in a positive and productive manner by creating and setting an expectation for excellence. Demonstrate an engaging, open, positive and inclusive leadership style with a proven history of displaying integrity, high regard for honesty and courage, and an open mind to innovative approaches for improving services and expanding impact. 

Lead Fundraising Efforts:

  • Serve as the leader in fundraising efforts by working with the board and staff to establish a plan for how the Y will continue to raise contributed dollars for service growth, keeping programs affordable for all and continued facility expansion.  Capital development experience a must to provide leadership for a planned $4M+ program to build an aquatic center.  Be able to position the Y as a charity of choice by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors. 

Advocate the Vision of the YMCA and be the Heart and Soul of the Operation:

  • Proactively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff and volunteers. Serve as an ambassador for the mission, cause and vision for the YMCA within the community as a respected leader with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA.

 Implement the Y’s Strategic Plan:

  • Lead the organization in an effort that rallies all YMCA stakeholders to achieve the Y’s 2016 strategic plan, aligning with the mission and vision. By partnering with staff, board, Y members and the community, implement the plan to drive collective and bold impact and address critical social issues in communities served. 

Continue Strengthening Operational Performance:

  • Assess all aspects of the current operation and create a plan that will continue to grow membership and programs in service to the community. Also provide leadership to improve the current fiscal performance to develop a healthy and financially sustainable organization. Work with the board to develop long-term and annual tactical plans for achieving key goals and objectives.
Educational Background: 
Must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year college (Note: this is a non-negotiable requirement per YMCA national membership standards).
Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Candidate Criteria:

  • Minimum five years’ prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or organization of comparable complexity.
  • Successful fiscal management track record with budgets of $2M or more annually. 
  • Experience leading successful fundraising efforts including annual and capital campaigns.
  • Ability to develop and strengthen community relationships and effective collaborations.

Preferred Candidate Criteria:

  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain this through Y-USA).
  • Effective skills in board governance and serving as an integral partner with volunteers.
  • Experience leading and implementing a strategic plan.
  • Working knowledge of property and facilities utilization, maintenance, and development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00
