The mission of the YMCA of Metro Chicago is to develop strong children, families and communities across Metropolitan Chicago through academic readiness, character development, violence prevention, fitness and healthy living. Our network of 23 membership centers, five camps, early learning,  school-aged and other programs at 100+ sites in the city and suburbs provides everyone with a safe place to learn, play and grow.  

The Executive Director branch has primary responsibility for the leadership and administration of the operational plan, budget, programs and services at the center.  Duties include annual support campaign, capital campaign, strategic planning, program launches and new program development, resident operations (where applicable), board development, membership and marketing, staff supervision, and continuous improvement.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages the center in accordance with the policies, procedures and standards established by the Board of Managers of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago with counsel and guidance of the Center Board of Directors.
  • Manages the total operating budget.
  • Oversees the management of the bldg including gymnasium, fitness rooms, sauna, steam room, weight training room, cardio-vascular room, meeting rooms, 2 indoor pools, whirlpool, aerobics room, martial arts room, gymnastics, food court, child care, cyber fitness, multiple locker rooms and administration offices. Property contains outdoor fields.
  • The YMCA provides over 250 programs and classes to the community.
  • Provides leadership to exempt full time and part-time non-exempt staff and volunteers.
  • Provides leadership to program launches and new program development.  Continuously updates and improves current programs such as aquatics, gymnastics, fitness, youth sports, family activities, day camp, before and after school and collaborative ventures with community agencies.
  • Provides leadership to the annual support campaign and financial development activities of the Association.
  • Provides leadership and motivation to the Center’s Board of Directors to ensure a successful operation geared to meet community needs and services.  Plays a significant role in recruitment, training, and development of a growing cadre of lay leaders to ensure a strong and productive board.
  • Participates in the membership and marketing initiatives of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago as well as creates new and innovative approaches to attract and retain membership and residence.
  • Develops the strongest possible staff team; evaluates the performance of employees; counsels them in areas where improvements are needed and continually strives to improve performance level of employees through the continuous improvement process and performance standards.
  • Supervises the use and maintenance of the facility to ensure a bright, clean, and functional environment.  Conducts facility audits including life-safety, mechanical, structural-architectural, electrical equipment, furnishings, etc.
  • Joins with community networks to develop and provide programs to address community issues.  Collaborates with businesses and institutes in order to further the work of the YMCA.
  • Administers the customer Continuous Improvement Program.  Improves customer service survey score each year.
  • Follow and adheres to the Association Center Management Standards of Excellence goals set each fiscal year.
  • Manages all Center Capital and initiatives.
  • Provides a vision for the center
  • Any additional duties as assigned

Supports the commitment of the YMCA to child abuse prevention by:

  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree, Masters preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 - 7 years successful leadership/supervisory experience.  
  • YMCA executive experience a plus. 
  • Should have a positive history of leadership in the areas of staff development, fund raising, program planning and innovation, budget development and management of fiscal control systems, financial development, strategic planning and community development.
