Increase community-based stewardship of the Platte River and associated habitats through a successful volunteer and outreach program at the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center that works in partnership with the Kearney area community.

To support the National Audubon Society's mission - to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the Earth's biological diversity.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and lead a plan for annual, year-round volunteer recruitment and training in coordination with program staff.
  • Develop and lead a plan for annual volunteer retention and recognition in coordination with program staff.
  • Promote volunteer program through presentations, marketing at community events, media relations, and producing/distributing marketing materials.
  • Expand local engagement in crane season programming and eco-tourism at Rowe Sanctuary. Organizes crane season volunteer schedule in order to fill all needed positions.
  • Oversees the annual review and revision of Rowe’s safety procedures, including coordinating training for staff and volunteers.
  • Oversees the coordination of volunteer housing, including maintaining and scheduling of Rowe’s volunteer houses, as well as the securement of off-campus additional housing as needed.
  • Ensures that the center is staffed with trained volunteer(s) at any time that staff is unavailable to greet visitors and answer phones.
  • Assist all staff in filling needed volunteer positions throughout the year.
  • Keep current the volunteer handbook detailing guidelines and policies.
  • Assist with programs as indicated by Center Director.
  • Manage volunteer database.
  • Develop and implement a communications plan utilizing social media, the newsletter and other print sources, website, and news media to increase the number of contacts that Rowe Sanctuary has with volunteers annually.
Educational Background: 
BS or BA degree in education, science, communications, or related field preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • An engaging and energetic demeanor and the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, and potential partners will be fundamental to success.
  • A passion for conservation of the natural resources of Nebraska.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills and be able to multi-task.
  • Minimum of three years of experience preferred in volunteer program or customer service.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office ® software essential.
  • Experience working with nonprofit, volunteer-based organizations preferred. 
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings
