The Outreach Associate, Chapters and Partnerships is a member of the National Audubon Society Western Water Initiative team focused on advancing balanced solutions to water use in the West to ensure birds, ecosystems, people and economies thrive.  This position will be part of a new Audubon program focused on the Saline Lakes of the Intermountain West, with an initial focus on the Great Salt Lake. This network of lakes provides critically important breeding and stopover habitat for millions of migratory birds and supports local and regional economies. Under the direction of the Director of the Saline Lakes Program, the Outreach Associate will be responsible for maintaining and coordinating relationships with designated external partners and the Audubon network to support implementation of the Saline Lakes Program.

This position will be remotely located in Salt Lake City, UT until a program office is opened over the coming months.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work collaboratively across the Audubon network to build relationships and coordinate partnerships including:
    • Coordinate with Pacific Flyway, Central Flyway and National Audubon conservation and policy staff
    • Develop strong and effective working relationships with local Audubon Chapters in priority saline lake regions, such as Utah, Nevada and Oregon
  • In collaboration with the Director:
    • Build, maintain and coordinate relationships with designated external partners and collaborators to support implementation of the saline lakes program
    • Coordinate and facilitate connections and engagement in key communities to support saline lakes program efforts
    • Develop and manage projects designed to complement and benefit the goals and objectives of the saline lakes program
    • Work with local Audubon Chapters on priority issues and to develop projects that advance the goals and objectives of saline lakes program
  • Act as an effective ambassador of National Audubon and the saline lakes program, within local communities
  • Plan, organize and manage events as needed
  • Contribute to ongoing development and implementation of saline lakes program communications strategy, including: support social media outreach and content development; develop saline lakes content for the Western water newsletter
  • Manage designated projects on time and on budget
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in public or environmental policy, or natural resources or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2-3 years’ experience in relevant communications or communities and relationship management. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Personable, positive attitude, and strong people skills - relates well to people with a range of interests and differing perspectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to formulate ideas and express them clearly; superior interpersonal skills also a must.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management capabilities and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Previous experience with volunteer coordination and management, including recruiting and training
  • Must be a self-starter, one who is highly motivated, able to work independently, as well as part of team, and and juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong problem solving skills, including ability to respond quickly and effectively to unforeseen challenges.
  • Effective listening, probing, and assessment skills.
  • Passionate about environmental conservation and a recognition that balanced solutions for water are important to ensure that birds, ecosystems and people thrive.
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, Excel and other key Microsoft Office applications.
  • Willingness to travel and work weekends and nights, as required.
