Develops strategic plan and operational objectives for the newly created National Geographic regional network. Manages regionally-based network team to increase geographic competency by rolling out NGS educational programming to reach educators and students in every state throughout the country. Seeks and develops national partnerships to amplify and grow rollout of educational programming through the network. Develops strategy for use of NG funds, including state-restricted funding, for regions and states to maximize reach, impact, and ROI. Oversees evaluation plans for educational programming through the network and oversees quarterly impact reporting on a state level. Oversees development of educator programs in alignment with NGS education stakeholders that are scalable across the regional system. Works with staff across NGS to identify ways the regional network can support NGS programming in the states.
- Program Strategy: Sets high level goals for the regional network including formulation of network strategy and oversight of national, regional and state plans. Develops strategy for use of NG funds, including state-restricted funding, for regions and states to maximize reach, impact, and ROI. Manages six Regional Directors as they set regional and state goals and targets and their relationship with the Director, Educator Networks at NG HQ. Reviews and makes recommendation on regional and state action plans. Monitors state-level educational policies, trends in education, best practices in educator development, and partnership opportunities. Develops strategies for incorporation of these learnings through the regional network. 30%
- Program Management: Oversees the creation of professional learning programs and other educational programming that build geographic competency, based on NGS education priority areas, and scalable throughout the network. Represents NGS at meetings and conferences. Oversees network-wide evaluation, analyzes results and alters strategies as needed. Ensures that metrics, evaluation and tracking are built into regional and state action plans in order to show impact of regional network. 20%
- Marketing, Communication, and Partnerships: Identifies and builds strategic high-level relationships with external organizations and communities that could support and join our work at the national level (e.g., State Social Studies Supervisors, State Science Supervisors, the National Governors Association, teacher membership organizations, etc.). Supports Regional Directors as they build relationships with regional or state based- partners. Develops and maintains partnerships and structures that align state network goals to NG goals. 30%
- Team, Divisional, and Organizational Collaboration: Creates close connections between the education work of NGS with our scientific and grant making work at the national, state and regional levels. Incorporates the needs of National Geographic projects into the national, state and regional networks, including program responsibilities and budgets. Builds national partnerships with NGP, Cengage, and other branded NG activities and develops strategies for connections on a regional level. Aligns goals and optimizes programs for positive impact across National Geographic. 20%
Minimum Type and Years of Experience
- 10+ years in education/policy/management with a minimum of 5 years in leadership positions.
Knowledge and Skills
- Must have specific expertise and experience in running a regional network, managing directors across the country. Additional expertise desired in educator professional learning instructional materials development, assessment, organizational change, and policy reform. Should have deep expertise in educational systems and substantial experience with real world educational improvement efforts. Should be an experienced manager of people in a team with distributed leadership and possess the skills to coordinate large, complex programs.
