Summary of Principal Responsibilities
The Assistant Regional Director (AARD) is a key member of the West Regional management team and assists the Regional Director in providing strategic and creative leadership in the West Region, a 13-state area in which there are 11 programs.
The AARD assists the Regional Director in supervision of program staff and volunteers to give regional and local expression to broader organizational goals. The AARD advises and assists the Regional Director in communications to constituents, the public and the Religious Society of Friends. They may be delegated to participate in AFSC-wide staff groups to help assure organization-wide coherence, collaboration and program excellence. They support the Regional Director in working with the regional executive committee. The AARD also supervises staff as assigned by the Regional Director; assists in management of the region’s financial resources; participates as assigned in regional and organizational fundraising, supports the Regional Director with grant management and compliance; and participates in outreach with peace and justice organizations within the region.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:The key responsibilities of the Assistant Regional Director include the following:
Program Planning and Direction
- Foster staff understanding and competency in developing sound program plans, program descriptions and other creative means to articulate program goals and outcomes for greater program impact and increased individual and institutional financial support.
- Participate in region-wide program plan development, assisting the Regional Director and Associate Regional Director in working with staff to ensure all projects and programs are of high quality and effective, and are focused on the mission, goals and objectives of the AFSC.
- Encourage and facilitate intra and inter-regional program collaboration aimed at higher-level program impact and increased competitiveness for grants and other financial support.
Staff Management, Development and Support
- Supervise program and administrative staff, as assigned.
- Cultivate a work environment that attracts and maintains a diverse and highly motivated staff.
- Promote teamwork, common purpose, and continuous professional growth.
- Assist the Regional Director in ensuring effective regional staff hiring, orientation and training.
- Ensure that staff members under direct supervision follow all AFSC policies and procedures.
Affirmative Action
- Assist the Regional Director in consultations with the Human Resources Department, the Chief Diversity Officer, and other staff as appropriate, to apply AFSC’s diversity and inclusion efforts and our Affirmative Action policies to regional staffing, administrative functioning and program within the region.
Financial Management
- Assist the Regional Director with management of the regional budget. As assigned, prepare draft grant budgets and annual budgets as part of the program planning process; monitor grant and larger program budgets, and recommend necessary action to meet budget requirements.
- Assist in ensuring regional compliance with AFSC financial policies, procedures, and directives.
- Assist in ensuring good stewardship of AFSC resources.
Fundraising
- Collaborate with the Regional Director and Development staff to develop and implement fund-raising strategies, plans and fundraising goals.
- Support regional efforts to secure grant funding and collaborate, as assigned, in donor identification, cultivation and solicitations.
- Assist the Regional Director to ensure compliance with organizational grant guidelines and standards, taking on delegated grant management responsibilities.
Outreach and Communications
- Assist the Regional Director in maintaining contact with Regional Executive Committee and Corporation members and with the Religious Society of Friends in coordination with the national Friends outreach program, and assure AFSC participation in the Yearly Meetings; encourage Friends’ participation in AFSC activities.
- Assist the Regional Director in ensuring that public communications originating from staff and volunteers in the region, including web and social media, are accurate and in accord with AFSC policies and procedures.
- Advise and assist the Regional Director in representing the viewpoints of the AFSC to constituents and media outlets in the region.
Collaboration
- Encourage collaboration among staff members and across regions of AFSC for the sharing of analysis, strategies, methods and opportunities for joint programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in non-profit management, social science or related field required.
Experience:
- Minimum four years of management experience, including supervising professional staff.
- Demonstrated experience managing in the non-profit sector.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in program and budget development and management.
- Demonstrated experience in staff and work team supervision and development, including use of coaching and mentoring techniques.

- Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
- Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
- A broad understanding of social, political and economic issues. Expertise in immigrant rights, youth, healing/criminal justice, and/or food justice programs a plus.
- Compatibility with AFSC’s approach to grassroots organizing, and strategies for strengthening community-based capacities and efforts toward peace and justice.
- Demonstrated ability to connect with diverse audiences and to influence situations using tact and diplomacy; ability to persuade and motivate others.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with knowledge of and experience in using consultative decision-making processes; experience working under pressure and adapting to changing situations and priorities.
- Experience working collaboratively with individuals, groups and organizations.
- Ability to travel frequently and to work some weekends.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills.

Compensation: Salary Range starts at $60,452 – Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
