The Chief Legal Counsel is a key partner and advisor to organizational leadership and serves as a member of the Core Leadership team responsible for the Association's vision, strategy and operating plans. This role acts to ensure that the Association's business strategies, policies and programs consider and are developed with full recognition of legal implications and risks while supporting our mission.  The Chief Legal Counsel leads and manages the Legal Department while providing legal services as a practicing legal counsel, and manages external relationships and legal matters with outside legal counsel.  This role ensures that we conduct the legal affairs of the Association in an effective and efficient manner including ensuring record creation and retention practices comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serving as an advisor and assisting on corporate strategy including defining and developing policies, procedures and practices. 
  • Advises leadership on all legal matters pertaining to the Association including contracts, obligations, litigation and compliance.
  • Oversight of all contracts and agreements entered into by the Association including contract management. 
  • Managing budgets and accurately forecasting potential legal risks which may impact our financial statements.
  • Serves as Assistant Board Secretary to our Board of Managers and advises our Board on legal matters including drafting board resolutions, approving minutes and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Works on special projects including mergers, acquisitions, real estate transactions and other projects.
Educational Background: 
The ideal candidate is a seasoned legal counsel with a J.D. from an accredited law school, an active Illinois bar license and a minimum of 15 years professional experience.
Skills/Experience: 

Experience as an in-house counsel is strongly preferred. Additional experience in risk management, real estate transactions and labor & employment are highly preferred.  Candidates should demonstrate a passion and commitment to the YMCA's mission and vision and the ability to serve as a trusted advisor. This includes the ability to interpret laws and regulations and offer creative solutions and best practices based on an ever-changing legal landscape.
