Salary: $75-85K per year

 

Position Introduction:

 

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is seeking a dynamic, skilled writer/editor to craft and refine engaging content about one of nature’s most threatened animal groups – wild birds – and ABC’s work to conserve them and their habitats across the Americas. The position will play a key role in expanding the reach and awareness of ABC, while also motivating people to take actions that benefit birds and advance ABC's mission. We’re seeking a creative and news-focused person who can also write accurate, persuasive prose while thinking creatively and innovating in the rapidly evolving digital content space.

 

Well-qualified candidates will thrive in a fast-paced, high-productivity environment; enjoy working collaboratively with staff and external contacts; possess experience with and interest in conservation and legislative policy; and have a background in environmental topics and a passion for nature, conservation, and birds. The position reports to the Director of Communications within the ABC Communications & Marketing team.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Primary Duties:

 

  • Identify storytelling opportunities that demonstrate American Bird Conservancy's mission, work, and impact, and mobilize audiences to take actions that help advance ABC's mission.
  • Report and write digital content, including but not limited to news stories and blog posts.
  • Assist ABC's Media Relations Specialist and Magazine Editor with press releases and magazine stories as needed.
  • Support ABC's Marketing team with writing, editing, and proofreading content used in a digital ecosystem, including web, email, social media, digital advertising, and more.
  • Work closely with ABC staff and partners to stay informed and aware of ABC's work and impact.
  • Fact-check content as needed.
  • Contribute to the further development of and adherence to ABC’s brand standards, organization-wide content strategy, and style guides.
  • Collaborate with other writers on staff.
  • Manage freelance writers and consultants, when applicable, in coordination with Director of Communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 

 

Position Requirements:

 

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including proven ability to transform technical information into engaging content for a lay audience in such forms as blogs, articles, news releases, and website content.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work as a team player under tight deadlines with multiple stakeholders. Familiarity with project management systems a plus.
  • BA/BS or MA/MS in Journalism, English, or related field, ideally with ornithology/environmental coursework or background.
  • At least five years working in content development (editing/writing/proofreading), preferably for an environmental, science, or policy organization.
  • Familiarity with AP style strongly desired.
  • Experience working in an omnichannel communications and marketing environment a plus.
  • Spanish language fluency a plus.
  • Interest in and/or experience with actively seeking out new voices and perspectives.
  • Knowledge of birds and the birding community a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, WordPress, Google Docs, Trello, Slack and other communications-related software.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Background screening required.
