The Center for Philanthropy and Social Impact’s mission is to elevate the knowledge of advisors and consumers in philanthropic education and to serve as a convenor in organizing and establishing professional standards for the philanthropic profession. Within the Center sits The College’s Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP®) designation - a cross-disciplinary philanthropy education program for advisors and nonprofit professionals. Since 2021, the Center has supported the Advisors of Color CAP® study group, developed Advanced Practitioners Case Studies, and conducted research and a convening related to Mapping the Future of Philanthropic Advising. The incumbent will assess the opportunities to continue these initiatives and develop new initiatives and partnerships.
With industry and academic experience, the Executive Director of the Center will have the credibility to provide strategic and forward-thinking leadership to build and sustain the Center. In carrying out responsibilities, the Executive Director has significant autonomy and is expected to understand market opportunities and have the creativity, savvy, and entrepreneurial mindset to build and execute initiatives of a new Center. The Executive Director is responsible for strategic leadership, financial oversight and sustainability, fundraising, and Center effectiveness and growth through research and new programmatic initiatives.
The Executive Director works across academia and practice and engages effectively with cross-sector leaders. This requires a committed and innovative leader that can foster relationships with professional advisors, nonprofit fundraisers, funders, media, and other industry leaders with a growing focus on communities and donors of color.
Serving as the Center’s primary agent, the Executive Director’s main objective is to develop a compelling brand that positions the Center as the leading authority for research, information, and educational resources in philanthropy and social impact for advisors and consumers. Additionally, the Executive Director maintains the Center’s economic sustainability by identifying new sources of revenue. Other duties included in the position entail overseeing teaching and lecturing, and supporting the accuracy and currency of the College’s CAP® designation.
Reporting to The College’s Senior Vice President, Institute for Learning Innovation, the Executive Director will function as the Center’s chief ambassador and strategist in leveraging research and education to ensure the College is at the forefront of philanthropic education for advisors and donors. - Provide leadership direction to staff and consultants within the Center and assess Center and program efficacy.
- Design, develop and oversee the implementation of new programs including vision, strategy, goals, and resource development in consultation with the advisory board and leadership.
- Shape the development of research and/or educational programs, and provide guidance to academic staff or instructors as appropriate.
- Advise on course curriculum and delivery and new content creation, where appropriate, for CAP®, other College courses/programs, and continuing education opportunities; work closely with the Vice Provost, and Provost to ensure the CAP® content is relevant, accessible, and meets academic rigor and standards.
- Work closely with our academic team on CAP® program delivery, content, and credentialing.
- Oversee Center policy development, compliance, financial management, systemic analysis and process improvement.
- Build a brand and national network and assist with Center fundraising activities, including securing, cultivating and maintaining relationships with donor prospects and foundations. Coordinate ongoing donor communication. Promote and highlight existing donors.
- Recruit members of the Center’s Advisory Council; lead quarterly Advisory Council meetings; and increase Advisory Council impact by leveraging their expertise and connections to broaden the scope and reach of the Center's work.
- Create an environment that facilitates a compelling, shared vision of the program with internal and external stakeholders
- Effectively link the CAP® program to the broader mission of the College
- Support the Advancement Department in fundraising for the program’s mission and goals

Expected Contributions
1. STRATEGIC AND ANNUAL PROGRAM PLANNING
- Have overall responsibility for the CAP® designation
- Support the program via working with Study Group Moderators, working with the CAP® Advisory Board, and building relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Be active in at least one professional association for advisors, such as Advisors in Philanthropy, National Association of Estate Planners and Councils, Purposeful Planning Institute, Financial Planning Association, or Association of Advanced Life Underwriters. Also, be active in at least one professional association for nonprofit gift planners, such as Advancement Network, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Certified Fundraising Executive, or National Association of Gift Planners
2. DIRECTOR, CAP® EDUCATION PROGRAM
- Master current course content across the curriculum, and have managerial responsibility for the accuracy, relevance, and timeliness of all course revisions
- Provide input into developing and executing the marketing strategy for the CAP® designation program and remain in close contact with Business Development to ensure the program generates revenue consistently
- Recruit and manage subject matter experts (SMEs) to assist with course revisions
3. DEVELOP AND MANAGE COURSE CONTENT AND DELIVERY
- Oversee the delivery of the courses in the program
The position requires a highly motivated individual who can serve as an advisor on strategic matters throughout the institution and can help solidify its future as a national leader in financial services education. The successful candidate will possess personal qualities and professional experience that include:
- An undergraduate degree or other advanced degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- CAP® designation or a Certification/Designation from a related professional organization required.
- 15 or more years of professional experience preferred with emphasis in financial services, nonprofit fundraising, philanthropy advising, and/or social impact sector.
- Relevant and progressive experience in a higher education setting.
- Insight into the current philanthropic landscape, with experience, understanding, and empathy-related to current structural inequities in philanthropy and how different communities come to philanthropy.
- Knowledge, practice, and experience in traditional and modern approaches to philanthropy, including planned giving, donor-advised funds, social entrepreneurship, impact investing, giving circles, and more.
- Deep and varied relationships in the philanthropic sector, with the skills and the ability to act as a convenor and facilitator.
- Understand market opportunities and have the creativity, savvy, and entrepreneurial mindset to build and execute initiatives of a new Center.
- Experience managing budgets and developing financial plans, program partnerships, and funding sources; sound strategy development, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and planning skills,
- Ability to conceptualize and oversee original research projects with practical applications.
- A deep personal commitment to the philanthropic community and continuing professional education.
- Experience recruiting, working with, and inspiring a volunteer advisory board.
- Able to lead, work effectively with, and influence peers, staff, faculty, and students.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills with the ability to communicate with and present to varied audiences, including advisors, nonprofit leaders, and consumers/donors.
- Must be self-directed and demonstrate the ability to think critically, make data-informed and research-based decisions, and to execute against committed deliverables.
- Able to effectively lead, coach, and manage others and to work effectively with client companies, donors, volunteers, alumni, partners, peers, faculty, staff, and industry partners.
- Sound analytical, strategy development, problem-solving, and project planning/management skills.
- Able to create, communicate and execute a detailed strategic plan and build partnerships.
- Ability to conduct research and assemble data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and presentations to support Advancement activities.
