The Shasta Historical Society is searching for a new Executive Director. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and has overall charge of the Society’s budget, finances, personnel, and operations. The Society Executive Director’s main charge is to provide overall leadership in achieving the Society’s mission and vision. The Society’s Executive Director oversees a total of 2-5 part-time and full-time staff, an annual budget of $328K, an endowment of $3.5M, and builds relationships with visitors, members, board members, prospective donors, area schools and education groups, other cultural institutions, and the community in general.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Job Responsibilities And Duties

  1. Promotes the implementation of the vision and mission of the Shasta Historical Society.

  2. Directs the general administration of the Society through effective management of personnel and resources and by implementing, creating, and enforcing policies and procedures necessary for the efficient functioning of the organization.

  3. Ensures that employees are appropriately trained and have adequate resources for the efficient delivery of the Society’s programs and activities and ensuring a safe and friendly environment for employees, volunteers, and visitors.

  4. Leads the development and implementation of the Society’s strategic goals to accomplish its objectives.

  5. Provides oversight of the Society’s locations and activities, research library, programs, and personnel, including exhibitions, public education programs, the Igo Schoolhouse and the relationship with Shasta State Historic Park.

  6. Ensures the Society’s collections are properly stored, preserved, and exhibited and that an effective collection policy is maintained by Historic Resources staff and volunteers.

  7. Cultivates relationships with other institutions that support and encourage cooperation in efforts to engage the larger community in an exceptional local history experience.

  8. Prepares budget proposals and works closely with Board of Directors on budget and funding related matters.

  9. Provides effective oversight of income and expenses and provides reports to the Board of Directors.

  10. Advances the Society’s development efforts by coordinating with the Board of Directors and the Development Committee to identify and cultivate donors and supporters.

  11. Leads efforts to increase community fundraising through grants, sponsorships, and earned income in support of Society programs, exhibits, collections management, and operations.

  12. Serves as a resource person and advocates for topics relating to or affecting the Shasta Historical Society.

  13. Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations within the field.

  14. Duties include but may not be limited to the above.

Educational Background:

Skills/Experience: 

Required Qualifications

  1. Evidence of effective leadership and administrative experience in senior positions, in previous employment, and preferably at a non-profit.

  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively advance the mission and vision of the Society.

  3. Demonstrated fundraising skills with a track record of fundraising successes that include cultivating relationships with private donors, foundations, and other funding sources.

  4. Experience using technology such as Google Workspace or Office 365, donor and collection management software, Canva or other graphic design programs, etc. to support both back office and public facing operations.

  5. A strong commitment to our mission: To actively preserve, promote, and bring to life the history of Shasta County. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. A degree or equivalent work experience in a discipline related to one of the Museum’s range of functions or operations such as history, library sciences, museum studies, archaeology, etc.

  2. The skills and inner desire to enthusiastically share the vision, mission, goals, and accomplishments of the Society with stakeholders, potential donors, and funding entities through a variety of channels.

  3. Past success in developing cooperative and effective relationships among institutions and their staff, boards, or support organizations.

  4. Experience creating or enhancing a visitor-centered experience that effectively reaches and engages diverse communities and audiences.

  5. Strategic planning experience that includes drafting, implementing, and refining an effective plan that keeps a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders engaged.

  6. Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial reporting, and the prudent management of an institution’s resources. 

  7. Experience in the creation and execution of effective marketing programs for a Society, nonprofit, or other institution.

  8. An understanding and commitment to ethical standards, legal responsibilities and best practices established by museum and library accreditation, state and federal law, and international covenants.

  9. Job Qualifications

    Physical Demands: Ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs. (approximately) overhead. Ability to perform administrative duties such as typing, filing, bending over to low files, reaching high files, and climbing ladders. Work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking, standing, reaching, lifting, and carrying heavy materials for brief periods.

    Work Schedule: General office hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, however this is an exempt position that works any shift, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $67,000 - $75,000
