National Forest Foundation (NFF) is pleased to offer a regular, full-time position to join the Finance Team in administering and accounting for our expanding portfolio of grants, contracts, and partner funding relationships.

About the NFF: The NFF works with communities and organizations to conserve and enhance the watersheds, wildlife habitat, wild places, and recreational opportunities across the 193-million-acre National Forest System.  The NFF seeks to engage all Americans in this work.

Position Function: The Grants Accountant will provide administrative and accounting support to finance staff at NFF and reports to the Controller. This position will be responsible for hands-on administrative, compliance, financial administration, and accounting for grant awards and will be performing accounting functions including reporting and analysis, reconciliations, schedules, and journal entries for grant financials. This role will maintain excellence in meeting compliance, recordkeeping, and reporting requirements with a focus on the contractual, regulatory, and financial administration and coordination of federal, state, and private grants, associated contracts, and agreements.

Location: The location for this position is flexible throughout the US. This position is a remote/work from home position and requires reliable internet access and a dedicated workspace.

Areas of Responsibility: 

 Position Duties and Responsibilities: The Grants Accountant will:

  • Prepare invoices for reimbursable awards.
  • Prepare grant workpapers and manage grant receivable schedules.
  • Prepare grant financial reporting and process SF-425 federal reports and SF-270
  • Prepare and maintain reconciliation and tracking work papers for advanced funds.
  • Conduct accounts payable activities.
  • Prepare journal entries as needed.
  • Manage both federal and non-federal funds with various levels of restrictions.
  • Provide ad hoc financial reports as requested.
  • Assist program staff to track program expenses.
  • Assist with the preparation of annual grant audit workpapers including SEFA report.
  • Perform day-to-day finance and accounting tasks.
  • Support the Finance Team with special projects.
Skills/Experience: 

Education and Qualifications:  NFF expects the incumbent to possess the following educational and experiential qualifications:

  • At least 3 to 5 years experience working in a grants administration and accounting position preferred;
  • B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent experience required; preference for candidates with a degree in a field related to accounting and finance.
  • Understanding of accounting principles including accrual accounting
  • Ability (experience preferred) in financial administration and compliance for federal/state/private grants and contracts
  • Existing knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance, cost principles, and audit requirements for federal awards (preferred), and / or an ability to learn quickly and thoroughly these kinds of requirements.
  • Ability (experience preferred) in monitoring performance and expenses of subgrants and subcontracts
  • Ability (experience preferred) in the administration of grant budgets
  • You must be authorized to work in the United States.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Compensation: The NFF offers competitive compensation commensurate with candidate skills, experience, and location. Total rewards at NFF, beyond salary, include generous paid time off, employer contributions to health savings accounts, matching funds for retirement, and more. NFF has recently (August 2022) implemented a new compensation program with grade levels as part of our commitment to transparency. The salary range for this position will be in the $56,000 to $75,600 range and may be eligible for locality adjustment.
