General Summary
The Specialist, Advocacy assists in the efforts of the Illinois Chapter to support state and federal public policy initiatives consistent with the Alzheimer's Association's mission through the increased engagement of volunteer advocates. They track specific state and federal advocacy activities for National metrics; work collaboratively with other departments to increase awareness, recruitment and relationship building of advocates in every congressional district and with elected officials; and collaborate with public policy staff to maintain and grow the advocacy base through various technologies.
This position is based in the Chapter office in Chicago, IL and reports to the Vice President, Public Policy.
Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Aids in recruiting and engaging volunteer advocates in the chapter territory with an overall goal of increasing the number of advocates and their levels of participation.
- Assists in implementing an aggressive grassroots advocacy plan of action for state and federal legislative priorities.
- Assists in implementing year-round integration of advocacy with other organizational events including Walk to End Alzheimer's, The Longest Day, as well as other fundraising events, programs and educational conferences.
- Assists in the planning and logistics for programs hosted by state and federal legislators.
- Assists with clear and consistent communication with advocates and volunteer leadership including Ambassadors and Constituent Advocacy Program (CAP).
- Writes advocacy updates and alerts.
- Assists in writing educational materials on policy issues and submits draft website content and newsletter materials in support of advocacy efforts.
- Assists advocates in letter-to-the-editor campaigns.
- Scheduling events and meetings, tracking portal activity.
- Sending weekly tweets to advocates.
- Creating event invitations.
- Reporting state visits.
- Periodic mailings.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in political science or a related field of study required
- 1-3 year's work/volunteer experience in public policy, equivalent grassroots organizing or campaign experiences
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate in-person, by phone, and through written communication with diverse populations
- Keen analytical skills to conduct research, stay abreast of legislative activity, and recognize and communicate new opportunities for advocacy
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and mobilize volunteers
- Strong organizational skills to multi-task in a fast-paced and fluid environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Social Media
- Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for the job
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 10%
