State & Community Engagement (SCE) is part of Community, State and National Affairs (CSN). The SCE team includes: 53 states and territories across 6 regions with regional management, the Office of Volunteer Engagement, the Office of Community Engagement (including the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA): AARP’s Educator Community), and the Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE).

Summary Statement

Works with staff, volunteers, members, chapters, and other AARP departments to achieve AARP’s social impact and strategic member value goals in the state.  Develops and expands a presence in targeted Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities through strengthening visibility, awareness of, and engagement with AARP New York.  Works toward enhancing volunteer capacity, building and expanding community partnerships, delivering AARP programs, and activities, advocacy and engagement of AARP members, and potential members and their families.  Engages volunteers in AAPI multicultural community outreach and engagement activities, key relationship building, grassroots activities, programmatic and educational forums and member experiences.  Works to engage members and volunteers from the targeted communities in the activities of the organization.  Fully engages volunteers in AARP New York’s state strategic plan activities, with a focus on AAPI multicultural communities.

 


Responsibilities

1. Serves as a member of the New York state team based in NYC and is responsible for developing a targeted AAPI multicultural engagement and outreach plan for the state that promotes awareness of and engagement with AARP New York in targeted AAPI multicultural communities and tracks metrics for success.  Provides on the ground engagement and outreach to develop strong, sustainable relationships with key organizations, leaders, volunteers, members, and potential members to advance AARP’s strategic priorities and to improve lives in Asian American Pacific Islander targeted communities areas. 

2. Promotes state-based social impact successes to improve the lives of members, potential members, and residents of the AAPI multicultural communities, in support of AARP goals for the recruitment and retention of volunteers and volunteer teams.

3. Expands awareness of AARP’s AAPI multicultural efforts in targeted communities and priorities among community and public policy leaders.  Identifies and positions AARP as a critical voice for age-eligible individuals, but also demonstrates relevance to all generations (i.e., decisions being made today can often most affect those 49 or younger) to ultimately raise engagement and awareness of AARP in targeted communities.  Manages and coordinates opportunities with public-speaking venues and other high profile venues, in collaboration with appropriate staff/departments/groups.

4. Enhances AARP’s reputation and raises awareness and engagement among AAPI partners, including non-traditional partners, community leaders, media, businesses, educators, and policy makers.  Initiates new relationships and sustains existing ones.

5. Collaborates with and supports state and national advocacy staff to build and maintain strong, productive relationships with AARP’s grassroots structure, local leaders, and elected officials in the targeted areas to achieve the advocacy and social impact agenda in support of AAPI multicultural communities. 

6. Works in close partnership with staff and volunteer leads to support the state volunteer structure.  Recruits and helps retain volunteers and volunteer teams. 

7. Engages members and potential members, volunteers, and chapters in grassroots, community outreach and organizing, and policy maker relationship activities in the targeted community in support of the AARP state plan.  Organizes and maintains visible and effective coalitions and partnerships dealing with volunteer engagement, social impact, and strategic activities.

8. Works in collaboration with state colleagues and national office partners to promote AARP’s strategic issues, priorities, programs, and activities.  As appropriate, facilitates interaction and communication with national office partners to request technical assistance and ensure that the proper resources are available for staff and volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates, and briefing materials.

9. Collaborates with and supports state and national communications staff and media partners.  Makes presentations at workshops and conferences regarding AARP’s multicultural strategic priorities.  Enhances AARP’s capacity to speak with relevance in targeted communities by raising awareness of needs, challenges, and opportunities associated with communicating in a culturally relevant way to multicultural communities with the state, regional, and national offices.

10. Demonstrates AARP Leadership Behaviors in all interactions.

 


Requirements

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Human Resources, and/or Non-Profit Management, Social or Human Sciences, or a related discipline and 5+ years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  Travel required up to 50%. Night and weekend hours as required to meet state office needs. 
Demonstrates the following strengths:
• Understanding of community organizing, communications, marketing and public relations
• Strong social media and writing skills and the ability to tell a cohesive story through visual elements; and familiarity with new media platforms
• Ability to handle multiple issues and projects in a matrix team approach, requiring significant consultation and collaboration with colleagues
• The ability to evaluate, analyze and adjust strategies and tactics in an ongoing, fast paced environment
