Chief Executive Officer

Serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Association and provides leadership for the Association within the framework and philosophy set by the Board of Directors. Has overall responsibility for the day-to-day activities including the programmatic, human capital, fiscal, and fund development operations of the organization. Serves as the primary representative and spokesperson of the Association. Fosters a genuine commitment to the Association's mission and values. Manages and directs the AJLI Senior Leadership Team, including the following direct reports: Chief of Staff; SVP, Chief Content Officer; SVP, League Branding; SVP, League Initiatives; (Open Role), League Advancement; VP, Development Associate (Open Role). There is also an additional support role, Special Advisor to the CEO, that can provide context and insight on AJLI’s history and strategy.

Please note that AJLI operates as a virtual team. This role is 100% remote and manages a remote team.

Areas of Responsibility: 

1. Board Relations: Partner with the Board to develop the strategic direction and priorities of the Association.

a. Work closely with the Board President to advance appropriate board governance.

b. Participate in all board meetings and board committees/task forces, as requested.

c. Build strong, effective, and collegial relationships with all members of the Board of Directors.

d. Maintain clear lines of communication and provide well-defined opportunities for board engagement.

e. Provide the board with adequate information, research, and data to help it reach sound decisions and policies.

f. Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship in reporting to the Board on financial and programmatic performance toward organizational objectives, and other issues of concern to the board.

g. Utilize the Board to its fullest capacity and address all issues of role clarity.

h. Serve as the liaison to the AJLI team, to provide support for Board initiatives.

2. Strategic Planning & Growth: With the Board and AJLI team, ensure that the Association's role is fulfilled through supporting the needs of its membership with long term strategic planning, toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.

a. Implement Strategic Planning initiatives and maintain a regular review and reporting of the status of goals and objectives.

b. Establish priorities for program strategies and implementation.

c. Allocate resources so that the budget, team, and priorities are aligned with AJLl's role and mission.

d. Ensure the Association's culture, programmatic work, and strategies uphold and reflect its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

3. Leadership & Impact: Provide inspirational leadership to attract, develop, empower, and retain a diverse team to effectively carry out the work of the Association.

a. Oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of the AJLI team, to ensure they operate as a cohesive, integrated, and motivated group.

b. Establish effective decision-making processes that will enable the Association to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives.

c. Demonstrate effective hiring and retention of competent, qualified employees.

d. Ensure that all human resource practices and policies are adhered to, and demonstrate a commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture.

e. Ensure that employee position descriptions are up to date and that regular performance evaluations are held.

4. Fiscal Oversight & Administration: Provide fiscal direction and guidance that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and the maintenance of the Association in a positive financial position.

a. Ensure the Association maintains sound financial policies and practices and operates in accordance with those policies.

b. Report financial statements accurately, reflect the proper financial condition of the Association.

c. Coordinate with the Senior Leadership Team in preparing the annual Operations and Capital Budgets, for annual Finance Committee approvals.

d. Provide multi-year financial projections, as needed, and as required.

e. Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.

f. Ensure compliance with all legal and contractual obligations.

g. Ensure all regulatory filings are completed accurately and timely.

h. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

i. Acts as signor for all agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

5. Program & Membership Services: Oversee the delivery of all programs and services to add value to the member leagues.

a. Develop solutions to address the declines in membership in the leagues.

b. Ensure accountability for effectiveness of programs and maintain high standards for excellence.

c. Explore new platforms for engaging leagues and their members.

d. Plan, promote and deliver conferences that equip attendees with tools to grow the membership of their leagues.

e. Build relationships with member leagues/league leaders.

f. Quantify and communicate the value proposition of membership in the Association.

g. Support the development of new leagues.

6. Branding & Communications: Effectively articulate the mission and value of the Association, internally and externally, while promoting a positive image of the Association and its member leagues.

a. Oversee all communication materials and public relations channels.

b. Serve as the principal leader, representative and spokesperson for the Association.

c. Initiate and foster strategic relationships with the member leagues, the media, partners, donors, the nonprofit sector, and the communities in which the leagues serve.

d. Communicate with a clear, articulate, and persuasive style both orally and in writing.

7. Development & Fundraising: Oversee all development and fundraising activities to support the work of the Association.

a. Revenue generation is a key priority for the organization. We are looking for a leader with experience in this space and the ability to lead the team as we build a pipeline of development and fundraising.

b. Diversify the funding to reduce the dependence on membership dues.

c. Develop a planned giving program.

d. Secure additional corporate partnerships.

e. Identify granters with shared mission spaces.

8. Other Responsibilities:

a. Perform all other duties as the workload necessitates.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree required (advanced degree preferred)
Skills/Experience: 

1. Bachelor's degree required (advanced degree preferred).

2. At least ten years of experience in senior leadership roles.

3. Extensive experience in the nonprofit sector required.

a. Experience in a membership association is preferred.

b. Experience in a federated organization, a plus.

4. Significant board development, strategic planning, development, and fiscal management experience required.

5. Strong commitment to the professional development of the AJLI Team; successful track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team.

6. Strong ability and experience working virtually and leading a virtual team.

7. Proven track record of developing and growing a brand.

8. Proven track record in revenue generation.

9. Substantial public speaking experience.

10. Limited travel capability.

11. Demonstrated commitment to voluntarism and women's community leadership development.

12. Strategic perspective, with intellectual curiosity and strong interpersonal skills.

13. Critical thinking mindset; with resourceful, adaptable, teamwork-oriented results.

14. Excellent written and verbal communications skills

15. Strong analytical and organizational skills a must.

16. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
