The Community YMCA is currently seeking a cause-driven leader to make a positive impact in greater Monmouth County, NJ.


Based in Shrewsbury, NJ, The Community YMCA is a $15.5 million organization serving 20,000 people with a team of approximately 92 Full-time and 589 Part-time/ Seasonal staff across five (5) service lines.

Reporting to the President/CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for ensuring successful operations and growth of the Y through program expansion and innovation, membership growth and engagement, volunteer and staff development, as well as strong fiscal management, risk management, facility management and financial development for our 5 service lines located throughout Monmouth County.
We are looking to identify a leader who can bring strong operations experience and help us live up to our brand promise of strengthening the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  1. Supervises branch Vice presidents and Executive directors to assure sound operations. Provides leadership and direction to the branches by coaching branch executives and by providing overall direction to the branch volunteers. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
  2. Monitors monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled.
  3. Ensures the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development, collaborations, and mergers and acquisitions.
  4. Identifies potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals, and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs. Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
  5. Provides reports to committees, the Board of Directors and the President/CEO.
  6. Provides staff leadership to assigned committees of the Board of Directors.
  7. Provides leadership to a staff annual campaign.
  8. Implements and oversees a program evaluation system to ensure consistency with the Y’s cause and standards.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, business, social services or equivalent from an accredited 4-year college or university
  • YMCA Organizational Leadership certification preferred
  • 10 years of demonstrated success in YMCA operations in a senior management role
  • Demonstrated ability to produce positive results in the areas of staff development, budgeting and fiscal management, program development, financial development, facility management, risk management, membership recruitment and retention, board and volunteer development, and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and purpose of the YMCA
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple physical and program sites
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships throughout the YMCA movement and with the community, vendors, and organizations
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Proven communication skills, both written and verbal
  • A professional image and the ability to work harmoniously with staff, members and the business community
