About GWC: Founded in 2001, the Garment Worker Center is a worker rights organization leading an anti-sweatshop movement to improve conditions for tens of thousands of Los Angeles garment workers. Through direct organizing, GWC develops leaders who demand enforcement of strong labor laws and accountability from factory owners, manufacturers, and fashion brands. We center immigrant workers, women of color, and their families who are impacted by exploitation in the fashion industry.
Position description: GWC seeks a dynamic, motivated organizer to join our team. The primary focus of this position will be organizing garment workers to effectively engage in two ongoing policy campaigns to improve wages, working conditions, and corporate accountability across the industry. This organizer will recruit and sustain a strong base of engaged garment workers who can drive campaigns, including by developing their organizing skills and political consciousness. The organizer must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends. Must be fluent in English and Spanish.

Conduct outreach to garment workers with member leaders.

Meet with workers to build relationships and identify workers who want to organize and participate in campaign committees.

Facilitate committee meetings with workers about campaign goals, strategy, and mobilization.

Work closely with the campaign team to identify the member engagement needed for campaigns, including meetings with elected officials and public testimony.

Develop and facilitate campaign-related worker training.

Plan and conduct campaign actions and community forums with the campaign team.

Work with the Communications Coordinator to identify member leaders for media work and presentations.

Facilitate general membership meetings, including training and political education in collaboration with other GWC organizers.

At least 1-2 years experience with:

Self-motivated, able to set priorities and goals, excellent planner, can execute organizational plans, and works well in collective settings.

Must be proficient with LA’s public transportation system, or able to drive their own car.

Strong commitment to social, racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections.

A desire to grow base-building organizations and build worker power.

A desire to learn and experiment in a campaign setting.

Fluency in English and Spanish - both spoken and written.

Speaks Zapotec or Mayan language (ideal but not required).

Salary range: $45000-$50,000
