HIAS seeks a Director, Risk Management to ensure the development, implementation and maintenance of an effective best practice risk management program and internal control environment. The preferred candidate is an experienced risk manager with passion for HIAS’ humanitarian mission.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conducts and drafts annual enterprise-wide risk matrix of risks to the organization, including all departments and offices.
- Coordinates enterprise-wide risk working group, involving representatives of Finance, Procurement, Safety & Security, Human Resources, Programs, Communications and country offices, to identify and mitigate risks and ensure legal and donor compliance.
- Advises General Counsel on risk concerns at the enterprise and component level, and identifies any compliance requirements.
- Maintains and updates spreadsheet tracking status of complaints/incidents implicating risks to organization.
- Maintains and updates an ongoing enterprise risk matrix and dashboard.
- Develops and updates regional risk assessments in support of grant applications and compliance.
- Identifies new or prospective organizational risks.
- Ensures that HIAS-branded entities globally maintain and update risk matrices at least annually.
- Ensures that planned risk mitigations are timely effected.
- Serves on risk assessment teams for new and expanded operations.
- Ensures that HIAS complies with any applicable government regulations.
- Conducts risk and compliance training for staff.
- Responds to risk incidents and internal control situations in headquarters and country offices as needed, including conducting investigations.
- Ensures incident reports are completed and properly followed-up.
- Develops and keeps current a Business Continuity Plan.
- Collaborates with Internal Audit, Data Protection, Safety & Security and Information Technology departments, as well as other internal stakeholders, in developing, implementing and coordinating risk management strategies, policies and guidelines.
- Socializes a culture of risk and compliance management.
- 6-8 years of risk management and compliance experience, and at least 3 years of relevant experience working on global risk management and compliance with an international nonprofit organization.
- Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish and/or French strongly preferred.
- Ability to travel internationally up to 20% of the time to complex operating environments.
- Knowledge of internal control processes best practices and familiarity with standard reporting metrics.
- Working understanding of risk management frameworks (such as COSO ERM).
- Experience in applying risk strategies and approaches to support enterprise-level achievement of business results.
- Experience responding to risk incidents in complex operating environments.
- Results-oriented with strong customer service skills and ability to operate at all levels of an organization in a highly complex environment.
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-cultural organization.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to manage difficult situations with tact and good judgment.
- Self-starter who is detailed-oriented and possesses sound judgment.
- Team player comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience with data management tools, including data visualization software highly desired.
