Finance Manager

National Position;  Remotely based anywhere in the United States

POSITION SUMMARY

The Finance Manager is a key staff leader in our 5 person Operations team, and is the primary staff person focused on establishing effective finance-related business functions and operations, refining, and improving processes, and keeping accurate financial records. This role reports to the Director of Operations and sometimes partners with our external CFO contractor and bookkeeper to achieve finance, operations, and administrative goals.

The Finance Manager role is best for someone who is excited by process and details and loves bridging the gap between finance folks and non-finance folks.  They are excited to collaborate in creative ways to ensure the sustainability of MediaJustice, in a way that is integrated with our goals and values.  They are innovative and love trying out new ideas and constantly learning and improving.  They are excited to work in an environment that celebrates diverse experiences and creative ways of thinking.

MediaJustice (formerly the Center for Media Justice) is a national media justice organizing and training collaborative led by and for underrepresented communities, and home to our signature project, the MediaJustice Network.  For over 10 years, MediaJustice has boldly advanced communication rights, access, and power for communities harmed by persistent dehumanization, discrimination and disadvantage. Areas of Responsibility: 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Accounting: Monitor internal controls. Oversee administration of the entity’s general ledger and other expense tracking systems to ensure the timeliness and accuracy of all transactions; compliance to GAAP principles. Produce monthly and annual financial reports for both internal and external reporting, including analysis of performance to budget, data for grant reports and proposals, and other measures.
  • Budget and Forecasts: Assist in the annual budget development process, including the preparation of departmental budgets, analysis of improvement opportunities, and identification of efficiencies.
  • Team Finances: Establish and maintain a process for staff expense and travel reimbursements; establish and uphold policy to remit timely and accurate reimbursements.
  • Grants and Resource Management: Work closely with the Development team to ensure compliance with all grants and resource stream deliverables and track resource streams with spend-down efficiencies.
  • Responsible Spokesperson: Represent the organization to and deal regularly with a variety of outside firms, organizations, and individuals, including banks and other financial institutions, auditors, consultants, insurance carriers, and other agencies.
  • Financial Vendor Oversight: Manage the external bookkeeper and liaise with the external CFO to complete critical day-to-day financial activities and monitor opportunities for improvement. 
  • Strategic Planning: Compile and analyze operations and financial data in support of strategic planning; distill, present, and provide useful reports to leadership, the board, and the team. 
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of work experience, with 3+ in a finance role.
  • Demonstrated comfort and fluency with Excel, Quickbooks, and numbers generally. Enjoying these will be vital to enjoying this position.
  • The ability to handle multiple deadlines and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to perform a range of tasks - from audit prep to monthly reconciliation to assisting with project reports.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice movements.
  • Committed to a racial justice vision and organizations that move it forward.

Compensation/Benefits: 

The Position

The Finance Manager is a 40 hour/week, full-time, exempt position on the Operations Team  that is fully remote, and reports to the Director of Operations. It includes the opportunity to travel occasionally when it is deemed safe (approximately once a quarter).

For the Finance Manager, the salary is $75K.  We also offer benefits and leave, including but not limited to:

  • Medical, Vision and Dental for $30/month, plus 50%  coverage for family premiums. 
  • $200/month reimbursement available for remote work or coworking costs
  • $60/month reimbursement for cell phone
  • $150/month for wellness/stress prevention
  • $1500/annually for professional development
  • FSA, and 401K with employer matching
  • 3 weeks vacation; 12 days of sick time, 2 days of personal time, 13 paid holidays; as well as at least 5-7 extra days in addition to existing holidays during the winter.
