Job Summary
The Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence/Rhode Gun Violence Education Fund is an exciting, fast-paced leader in gun violence prevention advocacy in Rhode Island. We are a recognized and trusted resource for legislators, an advocacy group for victims and survivors, and a political force during elections. The Executive Director is responsible for growing our movement and supporter base and for increasing engagement and the ability to bring grassroots support to the statehouse and executive branch by organizing campaigns and strategies that build power, leadership, and civic engagement while strengthening partnerships and representing communities most impacted by gun violence.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a results-driven self-starter and experienced people manager. They will have a strong commitment to building collaborative and effective teams with our partner organizations, board of directors, and volunteers. They will be familiar with the RI political landscape and with stakeholders in the community and in the general assembly.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Legal and Financial Compliance
a) Oversee the fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting, assure adequate controls, responsible for filing all legal and regulatory documents.
2. Mission, Policy, and Planning
a) In partnership with the board, define the organization’s values, mission, vision, and monitor and evaluate the organization’s relevance to the community, and the organization’s impact.
b) Keep the board of directors fully informed on the state of the organization and on all the important factors influencing it.
3. Management and Administration
a) Provide general oversight of all the organization’s activities, manage day-to-day operations.
b) Support and grow authentic and meaningful partnerships with other community-based organizations, leaders, and stakeholders focused on social justice issues that intersect with gun violence prevention.
c) Collaborate with and supervise our Digital Communications Contractor to build our digital organizing campaign and advance organizing, policy, and electoral programs goals.
d) Develop and implement strategies and tools for effectively communicating with the media, public officials, community groups, the general public, and supporters.
e) Organize and coordinate regular volunteer meetings and actively engage volunteers, board members, and committees to further the goals and missions of the two organizations.
4. Governance
a) Help the Board articulate its own role and accountabilities and that of its committees and individual members, and helps evaluate performance regularly.
b) Work with board officers and committee chairs to get the best thinking and involvement of each board member and to stimulate each board member to give his or her best.
c) Recommend volunteers to participate on the board committees.
5. Philanthropy and fund development
a) Provide leadership in developing and implementing the organization’s fundraising plan and monitor the plan’s progress.
b) Research funding prospects and submit grants and proposals.
c) Help ensure that board members carry out philanthropy and fund development activities.
d) Identify, cultivate, and solicit donor prospects.
e) Manage relationships with grantors and assure compliance with grant reporting requirements.
6. Relationship building
a) Identify the key relationships necessary to support our community work and assure proper planning, relationship building, and communications to develop and maintain these relationships.
b) Facilitate the integration of the organization into the fabric of the community by assuring the use of effective marketing and communications tools.
c) Act as an advocate within the public and private sectors for issues relevant to RICAGV/RIGVEF, its services, and constituencies.
d) Serve as chief spokesperson for RICAGV and RIGVEF, assuring proper representation in the community.
e) Work with legislators, stakeholders, volunteers, and representatives from the nonprofit sector to promote legislative and regulatory policies that encourage a healthy community and address the issues relevant to RICAGV/RIGVEF constituencies.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred with ideally a minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in a non-profit setting. The Executive Director must demonstrate critical competencies in four broad categories: leading change, government relations savvy, commitment to results, and strong interpersonal skills to motivate and successfully relate to volunteers and coalition partners. Relevant experience working with and organizing in diverse communities, specifically, youth, Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+ preferred.
Leading change: The Executive Director must possess the skills of a leader. They must share RICAGV/RIGVEF’s values and be committed to its mission, and vision. They consistently display integrity, model behavior, develop and build productive teams. This individual deals effectively with demanding situations and designs and implements interventions. They anticipate and solve problems and take advantage of opportunities, and are a self-starter and team player.
Government relations savvy: Has familiarity with the Rhode Island legislature and executive branches. Reviews and analyzes proposed legislation regarding firearms. Has a working knowledge of legislative procedures.
Commitment to results: The Executive Director is action-oriented and innovative. They translate broad goals into achievable steps. They anticipate and solve problems and take advantage of opportunities. Must have the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Strong interpersonal skills: The Executive Director manages continuity, change, and transition. This individual knows how to influence and enable others. They demonstrate well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with diverse groups and gain trust and spark interest.

Salary Range: $60,000-$ 65,000
